The PCSA is comprised of a competency-based Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) with standardized patient encounters and a written multiple-choice examination. Successful completion of all components reflects the medical knowledge and clinical skills reflective of a student transitioning from the preclinical to clinical phase of the curriculum. \nIncluded in this policy are thresholds for successful completion of the assessments, minimum passing scores and remediation processes for students who do not meet program standards on either or all components of the PCSA. This policy is provided to all students upon matriculation and again in the case of unsuccessfully meeting program standards as it pertains to the PCSA. \nRESPONSIBLE PARTY AND REVIEW CYCLE \nThis policy will be reviewed in even-numbered years and as needed by the Preclinical Affairs Committee, elevating any policy amendments to the Policy Committee and Program Director for approval. \nARC-PA REFERENCE(S) \nA2 .05 Principal faculty and the program director must be responsible for, and actively participate in the processes of: \nd) evaluating student performance, \nf) assuring availability of remedial instruction \nA3 .02 The program must define, publish, make readily available and consistently apply its policies and practices to all students. \nA3 .15 The program must define, publish and consistently apply and make readily available to students upon admission \na) any required academic standards, \nb) requirements and deadlines for progression in and completion of the program, \nc) policies and procedures for remediation and deceleration, \nd) policies and procedures for student withdrawal and dismissals \nDEFINITION(S): \nPreclincial Summative Assessment: A two-part, must-pass element of the curriculum for students to progress from the preclinical to the clinical phase of the program. \nObjective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) : A standardized assessment tool used to evaluate a student’s clinical and/or technical skills in a simulated environment. \nPOLICY \nAs a prerequisite for progression to the clinical year, UNC Chapel Hill PA students are required to successfully pass a two-part Preclinical Summative Assessment (PCSA) . This is comprised of: \n× Written PCSA. This is a multiple-choice examination which focuses on assessing students on medical knowledge expected of a PA student transitioning to the clinical phase. \n× OSCE PCSA. This consists of simulated patient encounters, focusing on assessing students on medical knowledge, patient care, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and systems-based practice expected of a PA student transitioning to the clinical phase. \nPROCEDURE \nWritten Preclinical Summative Assessment \nThis multiple-choice examination is designed to assess learners on various medical concepts covered in the preclinical phase of the curriculum. The examination is blueprinted in a similar fashion to nationally standardized exams, including End of Rotation Examinations and the PANCE, which all learners will encounter. Students are provided a blueprint and a topic list, again, similarly formatted to that of nationally standardized multiple-choice examinations. This examination is embedded in the PASC 730 Clinical Medicine III course as the final exam. This is detailed in the syllabus for that course as well. \nA. Grading and Passing Threshold \n1) The passing threshold for this examination is a minimum score of 70% . This is in alignment with all other passing benchmarks in the physician assistant studies preclinical curriculum. \nB.
