STREET LAKEVIEW, OR 97630 \nPh: 541-947-2114 ext. 233 Fax: 541-947-5575 \nULTRASOUND GUIDED LIVER BIOPSY PATIENT PREP SHEET \nYour doctor has requested a biopsy of your liver which can help diagnose liver abnormalities. The procedure is performed with ultrasound guidance by a radiologist from Central Oregon Radiology in Bend, OR and a diagnostic medical sonographer. \nBefore Arriving for Your Exam \n􀁸 Do not take blood thinners, aspirin or aspirin-related medications for seven to ten days before your procedure. \n􀁸 You must not eat or drink after midnight before your procedure. You may take your prescribed medications with a small amount of water. \n􀁸 Some blood tests are required before a biopsy and must be done prior to your procedure. The tests will be ordered by your primary healthcare provider. \n􀁸 You will not be allowed to drive home by yourself. Please arrange to have a family member or friend drive you home. \nAfter Arriving \n􀁸 You will check in an hour prior to your procedure time at the reception desk in the hospital main lobby. \n􀁸 You will be checked in and taken to a hospital room. \n􀁸 A nurse will come into your room, have you change into a hospital gown for your procedure, check all of your vital signs and will start an IV. \n􀁸 You will be brought to the radiology department for the procedure. \n􀁸 The diagnostic medical sonographer and radiologist will explain the procedure to you and answer any questions you may have. \n􀁸 The radiologist will explain the risks and benefits of the exam before asking you to sign a consent form. \nDuring Your Exam \n􀁸 You will be asked to lie on the examination table on your back. \n􀁸 Ultrasound images of your abdomen will be obtained to locate the precise area of biopsy. \n􀁸 A warm gel will be applied to your abdomen. This gel is very similar to hair styling gel. The gel allows sound waves to travel from the machine into your abdomen more easily. \n􀁸 A transducer, a small, microphone-like device, will be placed over the area being examined. There is no pain; however, you may feel mild pressure from the transducer. \n􀁸 Once the location is identified, the imaging physician will clean your abdomen and place sterile drapes over the work area. \n􀁸 The radiologist will numb the biopsy site; however, you may experience a slight stinging sensation as the medication is injected. \n􀁸 During the biopsy, a special needle device is used to remove a sample of your liver. You will hear a \"staple gun-like\" noise as the sample is taken. \nAfter Your Exam \n􀁸 After your procedure, you will go back to your hospital room and will be monitored by a registered nurse for four hours. \n􀁸 You will be allowed to go to the restroom. \n􀁸 You may feel some discomfort at the site of the puncture, including some radiating pain to your shoulder. \n􀁸 Your ultrasound liver biopsy will be sent to the laboratory for analysis and a final report will be sent to your primary healthcare provider. \n􀁸 Your primary healthcare provider will discuss these results with you and explain what they mean in relation to your health. \nAPPOINTMENT DATE: CHECK IN TIME: PROCEDURE TIME: \nCH 8/5/2015","cbCaioE4YMJT31XU","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaioE4YMJT31XU","pdf",48351,"English","# Before Arriving for Your Exam\n# After Arriving\n# During Your Exam\n# After Your Exam","[{\"question\":\"How should I prepare before the liver biopsy?\",\"answer\":\"Do not take blood thinners, aspirin, or aspirin-related medications for seven to ten days before the procedure.
