The health worker links transmission to contaminated food and water, poor sanitation, and inadequate handwashing, emphasizing safe toilet placement and boiling water. Practical prevention steps include vaccination, cooking food thoroughly, avoiding unsafe ice, frequent soap-and-water handwashing, and reducing flies through proper food storage and covered latrines.","Typhoid \nEnglish Health \nTyphoid \nOriginal story by: Marlene Custer Reference source for medical information: \n[http://kidshealth.org/en/parents/typhoid](http://kidshealth.org/en/parents/typhoid)[ ](http://kidshealth.org/en/parents/typhoid)Illustrations: Art of Reading 3.0 \nEnglish \nCopyright © 2017, Marlene Custer \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. So many of their people were very sick. Some had high fever , sore throats , and stomachaches. Others had achiness and diarrhea. Some had a strange spotted rash. \nSome of the sick seemed to be getting better , but some were getting worse. \nMosi wanted some answers. How could the healthy stay healthy? He walked to a nearby village and asked for the health worker that had been going village to village in recent months. \nOther villages had had similar problems , so the government had sent out a health teacher. Mr. Buhari held classes for those that wanted to know what was causing the sickness , and how to prevent it. \nHe agreed to come to Mosi 's village. \nFrom listening to the symptoms , the health worker said it sounded like typhoid fever. \nTyphoid is common in the tropics , and can be life threatening. It is caused by a bacteria called Salmonella Typhi. It may last a month or more , and can come back if precautions aren 't taken. \n\"How do people get Typhoid?\" the villagers asked. \nMr. Buhari told them that people usually get the bacteria by eating or drinking food contaminated by a person with the disease , or carrying the disease. It is easily transmitted by poor toilet facilities , and not washing hands well after using the toilet. \nIt is essential that toilets are away from drinking water supplies. If you are not sure if water is clean , boil it for one to three minutes. \nHe cautioned that people with typhoid fever should not handle or prepare food. \nFlies carry germs on their legs , so it is important to keep food put away. \nKeep toilets covered , and clean up rubbish from around your houses. \nIt is a good precaution to cook all your vegetables before eating. \nWash your hands with soap and clean water before preparing food. \n\"How do we get better from typhoid?\" \nThe health worker showed the villagers a chart. Drink plenty of clean water or juice. Rice and freshly peeled fruit are good sources of nutrition , also. \nSometimes it may take antibiotics to help the body overcome the disease. \nTyphoid is especially dangerous for young children. If you know a small child has been exposed to typhoid , contact a doctor or health worker. \nPREVENTION OF TYPHOID \n1. Get vaccinated before going to areas where Typhoid is prevalent \n2. Boil water before drinking \n3. Do not consume drinks with ice unless you are certain the ice is pure. \n4. Cook all food; avoid raw food \n5. Wash hands frequently with soap and water. \n6. Wash hands well after using the toilet. \n7. Discourage flies and other insects by: \nputting away food \ncovering latrines (toilets) \ncleaning up rubbish around the house","cbCaiqOu0ykVqaYK","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqOu0ykVqaYK","pdf",655277,2,1,12,"English","en",105,"# Typhoid outbreak in the village\n## How typhoid spreads\n## Preventing and treating typhoid","[{\"question\":\"What causes typhoid fever?\",\"answer\":\"Typhoid fever is caused by a bacteria called Salmonella Typhi.
