Introduction \nStudents review the difference between a chemical reaction and a physical reaction. \n2. Single Replacement Reaction \nStudents do reactions with 3 metals (Al, Zn and Fe) and copper chloride solution and observe precipitation. \n3. Double Replacement Reaction \nStudents add sodium phosphate to copper chloride and observe a precipitate and color change in solution. \n4. Decomposition Reaction – Electrolysis of Water \nStudents use a 9V battery and nickel electrodes to decompose water. Universal indicator is used to observe the pH changes at the electrodes. \nMaterials \n16 dropper bottles 0.1 M CuCl2 \n16 dropper bottles 0.1M Na3PO4 \n16 strips aluminum (cut from pie plates) \n16 paper clips (medium) \n16 steel nails \n3 dropper bottle Universal indicators \n16 jars with distilled water \n1 plastic container with 16 12-well plates and covers \n1 demonstration Ziploc bag containing \n1 9-volt battery with wire leads \n1 set of nickel electrodes mounted in Styrofoam \n1 plastic container with 16 sets of nickel electrodes mounted in Styrofoam \n16 Ziploc bags containing the following items: \n1 9-volt battery with wire leads \n1 small container of sodium sulfate \n1 small plastic scoop \n1 toothpick \n1 hand magnifying lens \n1 Binder containing \n16 Instruction sheets \n1 Observation sheet \nTraining Presentation \n1 jar containing silver nitrate solution \n1 piece of copper wire coiled to the jar. \nWhile one team member starts the introduction, another should write the following vocabulary words on the board: Physical change, Chemical change, Combination reaction, Single Replacement Reaction, Double Replacement Reaction, Decomposition, Combustion Whenever possible, refer to vocabulary words throughout the lesson and during review. \nI. Introduction \nA. Discuss Physical and Chemical Changes. \nAsk students: What is the difference between a physical change and a chemical change? Be sure to include the following information in the discussion: \n􀂃 A physical change does not change the chemical properties of a substance. \no No new substance is formed during a physical change. \n􀂃 A chemical change does change the chemical properties of a substance. \no One or more new substances are formed in a chemical change. Ask students: How can you tell when a chemical change has occurred? \nShare the following information: \nEvidence of a chemical change might be a color change, a gas given off, the \nformation of a precipitate or temperature change Tell the students that chemical reactions can be classified into 5 types: \n1. Single Replacement. \n2. Double Replacement. \n3. Decomposition. \n4. Combination. \n5. Combustion (this is a special case of Combination reaction) . \nB. Safety \n􀂃 Remind students to put on their safety goggles and to keep them on until the end of the lesson. VSVS volunteers should put on their safety goggles and keep them on until the students are finished. \n􀂃 Emphasize to students how important it is for them to follow directions. \n􀂃 If anyone gets any of the chemicals on their skin or in their eyes, they should flush immediately with water. Although the solutions are dilute, they could still cause eye damage. \n􀂃 Dropper bottles are easy to use. Apply slow, gentle pressure. \nOrganize students into pairs and distribute the following materials to each pair of students: Materials (per pair of students) \n2 safety goggles \n1 6-well plate \n2 Instruction Sheets \n2 Types of Chemical Reactions Lab Observation Sheets \n2 pencils (Students should use their own pencils.) \nC. Review Combination Reaction \nRemind students that the an experiment in the Elements Compounds and Mixtures lesson was on Rusting, which is an example of a Combination Rea","cbCaik9nILgF90kN","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaik9nILgF90kN","pdf",161343,12,"English","# Introduction\n## Physical and Chemical Changes\n## Safety\n## Review: Combination Reaction\n# Single Replacement Reaction\n## Demonstration\n## Lab Setup and Observation","[{\"question\":\"How do students distinguish a physical change from a chemical change?\",\"answer\":\"A physical change does not change the chemical properties of a substance and does not form new substances.
