Corruption reigns in both England and France. Mr. Jarvis Lorry and Lucie Manette travel from England to France in order to gain custody of Lucie's father. Dr. Alexandre Manette, who has been a prisoner in the Bastille for the past eighteen years and is now being sheltered by his former servant Mansieur Defarge. When they find Dr. Manette, he is only a shadow of his former self. They return him to England to restore him a life. \nIn London after five years later, Lucie's love has revived her father's mental and physical health. Charles Darnay is being tried for treason. He is acquitted, largely because Sydney Carton points out the remarkable resemblance between himself and Darnay, thus discrediting the testimony that Charles was seen passing information to the enemy. Sydney Carton confesses his love to Lucie and vows to make any sacrifice for her and \"for any dear\" to her. \nCharles Darnay's ruthless aristocratic uncle, the Marquis D'Evremonde, kills under the wheels of his carriage the child of Gaspard, a peasant in \nSaint Antoine. The next morning the Marquis is found murdered in his bed. One year passes after the death of Gaspard's child and the murder of the Marquis. Gaspard, who had murdered the Marquis, has been found and executed. Madame Defarge, \"registers\" into her knitting the name of \nEvremonde and all his race as doomed to destruction. When she learns that Charles Darnay is the nephew of the late Marquis, she \"registers\" the name of Charles Darnay. \nOn July 14, 1789, the peasants storm the Bastille. Charles Darnay decides to return to France to help an old family servant in distress. In France, Darnay is imprisoned as an \"emigrant\". One year later, he is acquitted, but that same day he is imprisoned again, denounced by the Defarges and \"One Other\". At this trial, a document written by Dr. Manette in 1767 when he was a prisoner in the Bastille is read. It reveals that Charles'father and his father's brother (the Marquis D'Evremonde) were responsible for the deaths of Madame Defarge's entire family and for Dr. Manette's imprisonment. Charles is sentenced to die. \nSydney Carton gains admittance into Charles' cell, drugs him, and goes to the guillotine in his place. His last words are, \"It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known\". \n========================================================= \nQ.-1.
