[March-2014] OR [BKNMU-2019] \n\"The work belongs to the class of the very best.\" -Evaluate the statement of Matthew Arnold in the light of Classicism. [March-2015] OR Discuss classicism and enumerate its characteristics. [S.U.-2019] \nAns. The word 'classicism' is rather difficult to define. Nevertheless, it has a clear meaning in the field of art and literature. The term 'classicism' is mainly used in the field of fine arts such as painting, music, sculpture, poetry etc. The term 'classicism' has many meanings. Generally, this word is used to mean very ancient form of art, perfection in art, in form, in style etc. The word 'classical' also means the art created in the ancient Greece, Rome, India etc. \nIn the common parlance the word classicism is used to denote the commitment of the artist to create work of art as per the norms laid down by the ancient masters. It is common knowledge that in the ancient Greece various forms of arts have reached a very high level of excellence. The same is true about our ancient epics like 'Mahabharata', 'Ramayana'. The ancient Sanskrit dramas by Kalidasa, Bhasa and others are also considered as 'classics' . \nThe classical works always carry certain definite rules. Further in both these epics, we notice divine intervention. Thus, the \ngrand theme and the participation of Gods and super-human heroes can be said to be some of the characteristics of an epic. \nThere is complete as well as perfect theme and such works are beyond the creative ability of an ordinary artist. It means classicism means perfection in theme and style. These are almost inimitable. In the later centuries genius like Virgil, Dante and Milton have written great works like'Aeneid', 'Divine Comedy' and 'Paradise Lost'. Keeping the classical rules and tradition, these works too are known as classics, though they were not created in the ancient days. \nThe classical approach of writing drama can also be observed through Aristotelian tragedy also Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles wrote their great tragedies according to these rules. Thus, the style, nature and temper of these works can also be called as classical. \nIn the history of English literature, we find the impact and influence of classicism.
