17,1986 \n# TWO-YEAR COLLEGES REMAIN ACCESSIBLE DESPITE INCREASED SCREENING\n\nEven though most now screen prospective students for admission and placement,two-year colleges continue to serve as an\"open door\"to higher education fornontraditional students,a new study says. \nSome 90 percent of community colleges and technical schools now subject pros-pective students to testing before admission, say the American College Testingprogram and the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges(AACJC)in their joint study,\"Status of Testing Practices at Two-Year PostsecondaryInstitutions.\" \nBut the testing is used generally to measure aptitude and to determine the stu-dent's placement, says the study. Therefore, the advent of student screeningat two-year colleges has not triggered a decline in enrollment of nontradition-al students, the study says. But it could, says one of the study's sponsors. \nWhile not taking exception to the findings of the report, which surveyed 676schools,AACJC Executive Director Dale Parnell said at a Washington,D.C.,newsconference yesterday that admissions and placement tests could pose a risk toolder students seeking a new career or advanced training. \nRisk For Adults?\"If you want a scare, throw a test at an adult whohasn't been to school in 20 years,\"said Parnell.\"It's not that we're opposedto testing, but we have great concern about access for the nontraditional stu-dent.\" \nThe use of tests in the admissions process has increased most in popular tech-nical fields such as electronics, computers and nursing, according to thestudy. In many cases, the demand for such training greatly exceeds the numberof student slots available. \nBut even though less well-prepared students are\"weeded out\"in this process,it does not mean those students can³t benefit from community college training,Parnell said. \n\"In many cases,we're not talking a two-year program, but a three-year pro-gram,\"said Parnell.A student who fails to gain entry to a technical programat first can take remedial science, math or English courses for a year and thenenter the technical program,he said. \nWhile testing at community and technical colleges has increased,it has not af-fected the enrollment of minority students, according to the 676 schools re-sponding to the survey.(more) \n6 \n# TWO-YEAR COLLEGES REMAIN ACCESSIBLE DESPITE NCREASED SCREENING(Cont.)\n\nThe correlation between testing and minority enrollments has been a cause ofconcern for“open-door”schools,since the number of minorities in higher edu-cation has fallen 2 percent to 3 percent each of the last two years, said Car1Crawford,president of the National Council on Black American Affairs. \nHowever,Crawford said tests at two-year colleges should be for the sole pur-pose of placing a student in the appropriate courses and not for denying a stu-dent access to the\"open door\"college. \nTesting must serve\"as a conduit to higher education rather than a barrier,\"hesaid. \n\"Status of Testing Practices at Two-Year Postsecondary Institutions\"is avail-able for $5 from American College Testing Publications,P.0.Box
