Please delete these notes before printing  \nTwo Productive Gardens:  \nThe Midi and the Mini  \nThese two sizes of garden were developed as answers to two different but important questions. The first question was:  \n“How much land is needed to feed a family for whom maize is the staple crop?” and the answer to that question is the Midi Garden.  \nAt 16m x 19m, the area covered by the Midi Garden equates to just half the size of an Olympic swimming pool, so it takes up far less land than a typical large cornfield.  \nThe second question was “How can householders grow a useful and easily cared for crop of vegetables on just a very small piece of land?” and the answer to that question is the Mini Garden.  \nThe Midi Garden  \nThe starting point for a Midi Garden was to work out how much maize a typical family of 6 needs per week. Assuming that a 20-litre bucket would contain enough maize to provide the family’s staple food for a week, it would take 56 cobs, weighing about 300g each, to fill that bucket. So, if each maize plant produces one full-size cob, you would need 56 plants to supply the maize for a single week of family meals.  \nIn order to grow sufficient cobs for a whole year, you need to plant 52 rows of maize, with 56 plants in each row. As 2 maize seedlings can share a single planting hole, the number of holes to be dug comes to 28 per row, as shown in Figure 1.  \nEach of the dots in the plan shown in Figure 1 is a planting hole. Putting compost and/or well-rotted manure as well as soil in the hole when you plant the maize will help the growing plants to thrive.  \nCover the ground between the planting holes with a surface mulch to retain as much water as possible when it rains.
