Evidence points to rising overweight risk alongside high rates of stunting, wasting, anaemia, and micronutrient deficiencies, intensified by poor diet, sugary snacks, sedentary routines, and limited access to nutritious food. The National Strategic Plan calls for urgent, cross-ministry lifestyle and food access measures, improved school meals, strong “First 1,000 Days” nutrition, and tighter controls on sugary and ultra-processed products.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/healthcare/","Healthcare",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/twin-threat-of-obesity-and-malnutrition-article-1-intervention-and-national-strategy/131697/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/twin-threat-of-obesity-and-malnutrition-article-1-intervention-and-national-strategy/131697.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Ava Twin threat of obesityand malnutrition ①\n\nNutrition paradox may be complexbut it's not unsolvableNS76·3·2026 PG·2 \nMALAYSIANS are stuck between inadvertentlymaking their children suffer from obesity or se-vere malnutrition.Nutritionists are sounding thealarm bells:there is a crisis of “double burden ofmalnutrition”.It's unsurprising this is happening in thecountry, where some people binge to the point of expe-riencing food comas while others are surviving on instantnoodles. Some studies show 15.6 per cent of minors agedbetween5and 19 are obese, incapacitated by poor diet, sugarysnacks and sedentary lifestyles.Others found that 21 per centof children under 5 are stunted, underweight and wastingaway, afflicted with chronic and acute malnutrition, anaemiaand micronutrient deficiency.Forty per cent of children havefailed to meet the basic dietary intake for calcium and vi-tamin D,mostly those from low-income households, deeprural areas and certain ethnic groups. As for overnutrition, obesity is rising:14.2 per cent risk being overweight while 7.3per cent are already obese. \nThe obvious solution is a middle ground firmly based on ahealthy diet, superyised viathe National Strategic Plan(NSP). \nAlready underway, the NSP aimsto check the pitfalls of urbani-sation symptomatic with Type 2diabetes and heart disease, oftenaggravated by a diet of fast foodand sugary drinks, and low phys-ical activity. What are we to doagainst this stark nutrition para-dox?Experts propose urgent andcomprehensive lifestyle interven-tions.Pushing aside myopic re-sponses,the NSP seeks to propelnutrition as an urgent national \nThe obvioussolution is amiddle groundfirmly based on ahealthy diet, supervised by theNationalStrategic Plan. \nSEKTOR DOKUMENTASI programmes. The gov-ernment must promote nutritious meals and, where needed, provide them free to childrenall the way from kindergarten tosecondary school.Proper nutrition in the“First 1,000 Days”(from conception to age 2)is vital to prevent early-life stunt-ing.Strongerschool food standards should be enforced whilethe sale and marketing of sugary drinks and ultra-processedfood should be tempered② \nObesity and stunting trends should be tracked, especiallyamong the disadvantaged rural, indigenous and urban poorwhere preventive access and clinical services are deficient. While tackling this crisis is complex,it's also doable.Malaysiais blessed with an abundance of cultivated food. It's just thatthe healthy meal is always relegated by popular, and notnecessarily nutritious, dishes. This crisis threatens the futurehealth of citizens, jeopardising national well-being,economicproductivity and all-round prosperity.Ignored,it may degen-erate into a national security threat.Worse,it becomes soaccursed thatfuture citizens medically deteriorate while sur-rounded by plenty of good and healthy food.","cbCailJBb3GirNXv","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailJBb3GirNXv","pdf",650352,"English","# Twin
