He was born in Akhetaten the new capital of Ancient Egypt. He was the son of pharaoh Akehenhaten, who tried to change the official religion and built anew capital at Akhetaten. His teacher was called Sennedjem.  \nWhen his father died, in 1332 BC, Tutankhamun became the new pharaoh at age 9 or 10.  \nSoon after becoming pharaoh he married his half-sister, Ankhesenamun, this was the traditional thing to do. They had two daughters who both died at birth.  \nTutankhamun was of slight build and 180cm tall. He had large front teeth, and a neck condition that meant he could not move his head. Also he had a deformed foot and was thought to have walked with a cane, many of which were found in his tomb. He had suffered from malaria several times and had once broken his left leg.  \nAs pharaoh he had powerful advisers to help him. He moved the capital city back to Thebes and built a new temple and many monuments, and the traditional festivals were celebrated again. He tried to reach out for trade with other countries, but there were battles with the Nubians in the South.  \nHis death, at age 18, may have been very sudden, because he was buried in an unusually small tomb which was probably intended for someone else. His tomb rests in the Valley of the Kings and was not opened for over 3,000 years.
