Her concept was simple, yet the impact was huge. During quarterly meetings, 100 communityminded women would learn about three local nonprofits, vote on one to support, and each woman would donate $100 to the winning charity.  \nThe Gresham Japanese Garden has been the recipient charity twice from 100 Women Who  \nCare East County chapter.  \nI never imagined how a group of women can empower change and strengthen our community.  \n– Sue Piazza, organizer  \n100 Women Who Care East County chapter was formed in 2019 by Sue Piazza when she was researching fundraising ideas. Throughout the 10  \na family of boulders surrounded by garden green a hot summer day  \n—Bill Peterson  \nyears, members have donated over $220,000 to 24 organizations. Sue stated, \"I never imagined how a group of women can empower change and strengthen our community.\"  \nGrains of sand become a beach, drops of water an ocean. None of us individually can give $100 and make a huge difference, but united together this organization has demonstrated it can be transformational for all in our [community. ](community.  100whocarealliance.org/)[ 100whocarealliance.org/](community.  100whocarealliance.org/) .  \nCrysanthemums Infuse Our Gardeners  \nby Mary Marrs  \nIn Japanese culture, chrysanthemums  \nare known as kiku and are a symbol of royalty and nobility. Chrysanthemums  \nare deeply intertwined with the Japanese Imperial family, serving as their emblem, the Imperial Seal of Japan, and the symbol of the imperial throne itself, known as the Chrysanthemum Throne. In the US, chrysanthemums generally symbolize friendship, happiness, and well-being.  \nThough chrysanthemums bloomin the fall, they have three different blooming periods; late September, early October and late October. Because most other plants have reached the end of their flower display, the autumn blooming chrysanthemum is symbolic of rejuvenation and longevity. On September 9th, Japan celebrates the Chrysanthemum Festival, known as Chōyō no Sekku or Kiku no Sekku. It's observed with events such as viewing chrysanthemum flowers, drinking chrysanthemum-infused sake, and eating dishes like kuri-gohan (chestnut rice) .  \nThe past few years, the Gresham Japanese Garden has recognized this tradition by displaying a variety of loaned chrysanthemums in the azumaya  \nonTsuru Island.  \nNow that the Gresham Japanese Garden includes an Exhibition Plaza behind the Kyoudou Center, GJG volunteers Deb Peters and Pat Dillman expressed a desire to grow specialty chrysanthemums to display in the Plaza, starting in the fall of 2026.  \nThey contacted a former bonsai student, Sydne Lewis, for help. Sydne holds her Master Gardener certification, and is a former volunteer at  \nDeb Peters (on the left) and Pat Dillman (on the right) at their raised bed of chrysanthemum pots. On the right:'Pink Splendor.'  \nthe Portland’s Lan Su Chinese Garden, where she cultivated her passion for growing these beautiful flowers.  \nSydne had a desire to pass on her knowledge, and Deb and Pat were eager to learn all Sydne had to offer. It was perfect timing.  \nDeb and Pat have since started a chrysanthemum garden with dozens of cuttings that Sydne help them root from her private collection. They are maintained in a raised bed in pots that are monitored closely. They also planted a few varieties in the cutting garden for ikebana arrangements  \nWhile there are hundreds of varieties, chrysanthemums are relatively easy to raise.
