prohibition question from thestandpoint of an observer and student who has ever been well-nigh a total abstainer,not only from tea and coffee but also fromalcoholic beverages,yet who,at his ordination,has avowed to betrue to the Christanity that Christ taught,and,therefore,also tothat which the Church has held dear ever since the night Jesustook the cup and blessed it.  \nUndoubtedly,some will dissent very heartily from much thatthey will find in this book,and the writer begs those who differfrom him to believe that he respects their motives and is animatedby no hostility.At the same time,the writer trusts that no onewill think that he believes there is no dishonest business in thiscountry or that no individuals are prohibitionists from wick-ed motives,such as bootleggers and others,who suffer froman irresistible craving to make money or who,masking theirreal business from the common eye,seek immunity to commitcrimes and obtain freedom from punishment.While the percent-age of business that is dishonest is far less than the agitator andthe professional reformer would have us believe,in the aggregateit is far greater than it should be.  \nHowbeit,it would be impossible to be at once a Christian anda conspirator against the truth:“Criminal law is directed againstthe criminal for the protection of the community,and againstno one else;its enactment cannot increase crime,and its admini-strative failure entails no ill consequence,except a correspondingdegree of impunity for the criminal.Sumptuary law is directedagainst the
