\nAuthor's Note \n个ruth really can be stranger than fiction, andI more exciting, astonishing and compelling aswell.I hope you will agree that these nine truestories from World War I prove the point. \nThey feature soldiers, sailors, airmen and civil-ians from both sides but what links them is thatthey all record acts of incredible daring, resolve, bravery and compassion. The stories have beencompiled from lots of different sources, includingpreviously published accounts, letters and diaries.Ispent many fascinating days in museum and libraryarchives, talking to historians and receiving kindassistance from experts and relatives. \nI hope you find reading the stories as interestingand inspiring as I found researching and writingthem. \nhe Clive Gifford \nCHAPTER 1 \n# The Lone WoIf\n\nAThen World War I started, flying was still in itsYY zinfancy and few military chiefs knew how tomake the best use of aircraft. At this stage, planeswere mainly used for reconnaissance -to observethe enemy's fortifications and any movements oftheir troops. Then both sides started to fit machineguns to their aircraft so that they could attempt toattack the other side's 'spotter'planes. \nGradually,specialist planes, designed to bombtargets or shoot down enemy aircraft, appeared.Famous fighter planes of World War I included theRed Baron's Fokker triplane and the Sopwithtriplane. But most were two-winged biplanes, like the Nieuport Scout piloted by a young \nNottinghamshire man who -in a short space oftime-became Britain's most celebrated flying aceof the war.A quiet, isolated person,a ^lone wolf inthe air,his name was Albert Ball. \n工 \nhe small, flimsy aircraft that nineteen-year-oldAlbert Ball was piloting suddenly dropped over300 metres. He struggled with the aircraft's con-trols but was powerless to prevent it plummetingtowards the ground. At a speed of over 160 kilo-metres per hour,Ball's aircraft thudded into theground, knocking him out. \nComing round,Ball climbed out of the aircraft'smangled cockpit. It didn't concern him that hecould have been killed. But what did upset him wasthe state of his aircraft. It was wrecked-nothingmore than matchwood. He had been building uphis flying hours as a trainee pilot in the RoyalFlying Corps when strong winds had made his craftfall like a stone. In a letter to his parents,Ballclaimed,'I would much rather have smashedmyself than any part of the machine.' \nJust over a year after this crash,Albert Ballwould become Britain's most
