It narrates a Paris encounter that leads Stone to write about Vincent, then explains how research can transform an author into a character. The piece includes motivation for writing about Jack London and Jessie Benton Fremont, describes collaborative correction with his wife, and argues that writing is a singular invention carrying human wisdom and folly. It challenges the idea of the past as separate from the \nFRIDAY FLASHES-JUNE 25+h \nFrom Address byIRVING STONE,Author \n\"I am often asked how I choose my sub-jects.The following story is an example. \nWhile in Paris,Iwas exchanging Frenchlessons with a student at the Sorbonnewhen he asked me ifI would like to goto a splendid exhibition of Van Gogh'scanvasses.I had never heard of Van Gogh, nor had many other Americans.I repliedthat I was not interested as I had just re-turned from Italy and had seen all thepaintings that I wanted to see.He said,T've heard that you Americans are goodsports,so if you come with me and arebored,I will pour enough excellent Frenchwine in you to wipe out your boredom.'Idecided to accept his challenge. \n# Stunning Experience\n\nI walked into a room with 80 of Vin-cent's blazing Elysian canvasses on thewall.I stumbled around and was stunned. As I walked outside the gallery almost ina stupor,I asked,Who is this man whocould do this to me?\"He had illustratedto me that the earth flows up into thetrees, plants, flowers and man;and, thatwe all flow into the air,the air flows intothe sun and everything fows back as aunit. The universe is one,we are all partof the same matter.Who is this man?一That is why I chose to write about Vincent. \nWhy did I choose to write about JackLondon? It was because I was raised inthe Valley of the Moon and Jack Londonalways fascinated me. \nWhy did I choose Jessie Benton Fremont in The Immortal Wife? When I wasa senior at Berkeley,I read a magazinearticle about Jessie Benton Fremont andsaid to myself that this is a fascinatingwoman. \nAbout 25 year later when I was writingthe book They Also Ran,I again cameacross Jessie Benton Fremont. The bookis about the men who were defeated inrunning for the presidency.I had learnedmore about Jessie through the story ofJohn Charles Fremont.I thought what amagnificent story it would be to write. \n# Characters Come to Life\n\nWhen I do my research for a book, which involves about two and one-halfyears,I identify with my main characterby becoming that person in hopes that bythe time you,the reader, reach the endof the first or second page, you too willbecome that person.I want you-to lve mybooks because if you do you_will neverforget them.Yet,how could I become awoman? \nI took the problem to my wife.Shethought perhaps I was exaggerating theproblem because after all,we do belongto the same species. She instructed me togo try and see what happens. \n(Continaed en page 214) \n\n| OFFICERS OF TH CLUB \u003Cbr>John B.Bates_ ______— Presldent \u003Cbr>_____Vlce Presldent
