The very name sends shivers down the spines of all but the most courageous adventurers. Undermountain is a place of constant danger and great riches. Many adventurers have lost their lives searching for the treasures to found in Undermountain, and the few who return are always laden with powerful magical items and large sums of gold. The beginning of what would become Undermountain began a thousand years ago, when the archwizard Halaster Blackcloak sought to build the greatest wizard’s tower the world had ever seen on Mount Waterdeep. The Dungeon of the Mad Mage started as the lower levels of Halaster’s tower. For many  \nyears the great dungeon constantly grew as Halaster used fell creatures from other planes of existence to tunnel and construct new rooms and passageways. Halaster’s constant downward expansion eventually led him to the Underhalls, a complex built by the dwarves of clan Melairkyn. The dwarves had long since been killed or abandoned the Underhalls, which when Halaster found them were inhabited by drow and duergar. Halaster wasted no time purging the interlopers from his newfound domain. After his war in the Underhalls, Halaster tunneled ever on inan inexplicable compulsion to delve ever more deeply into the mountain.  \nUsing the underground complex as his base of operations, Halaster traveled the multiverse collecting strange and dangerous creatures to live in Undermountain as his servants and protectors. Populating Undermountain became an allconsuming obsession, intensifying his already eccentric nature to the level of madness.  \nOver the years, Halaster quested on other planes and then sequestered himself to the lower levels of his domain; his great tower fell into ruin and the city of Waterdeep grew up around it.
