She’s worried about what’s ahead.“In Raeford, there’s not a lot of jobs,” Craig Miles said.“The turkey plant, it was the main thing around here.” \nThe House ofRaefordhadbeen running the turkey plant in the Hoke County town since 1975, but turkey’s decline in popularity as a food and high grain prices that made profits slim led to the company’s announce- \nment this spring they were shutting down the plant. \nThe closure comes in a part of the state burdened with unemployment from 9 percent to 16 percent, a discouraging scenario for the 950 displaced workers who will become the first large-scale test of North Carolina’s new unemployment system that curtails the length of time and amount workers can collect benefits. \nBoth Craig Miles and her husband, Michael Craig Miles, who worked overnights at the plant for the last eight years, are optimistic they’ll find new work to replace their $11 and $12 an hour jobs. She wants to go back to school to work towards a job in the healthcare field, while he hopes to get one of the 90 new productionlines jobs at aMountaire poultry processing plant in nearby Robeson County. \nSee NEWLY/2A \nWake schools superintendent focuses on challenges \nBy Latisha Catchatoorian [latisha.catch@triangletribune.com](latisha.catch@triangletribune.com) \nCARY – New Wake County schools Superintendent Jim Merrill is preparing for the challenges ahead. \nMerrill, who discussed the new school year with the media last week atthe Wake County Public School Systems Central Services Building, said one of the biggest challenges is trying to sharpen the focus on academics. \n“Everyone sets measures for our success, but I’d like to see Wake County set its own measures for success,” he said. \nHe said teachers – both locally and nationally – are having a “harder time than ever.” The school system requires many teachers, and school calendars aren’t being extended so they have more to teach in the same time frame. \n“We keep squeezing more and more into the same size shoe,” he said. \nOn his first day as superintendent, Merrill met with local principals and assistant principals, and said he was impressed with what he saw in the classrooms in terms of literacy and mathematics. \nHe also visited a cafeteria manager atone school who hasbeen workingin school cafeterias for 17 years. Merrill said she told him in all the years she has worked, she had never met a superintendent. \nSee WAKE/2A \n| | \u003Cbr>N.C.
