It examines key diagnostic features, the clinical presentation, and the categories of skills observed, alongside the treatment approaches used across medical, social, educational, and occupational therapy domains.","# TREATINGA CASE OF SAVANT SYNDROME\n\nJ.Busuttil  \n## ABSTRACT\n\nMemory and artistic prodigies among the population at large are uncommon;among the mentally retarded,they are rarer still.This article describes thetreatment of such a case,technically known as the Savant Syndrome,seen byoccupational therapists at Mount Carmel Psychiatric Hospital and treated over aperiod of 18 years.  \nKeywords:Autism,Occupational Therapy,Savant.  \n## INTRODUCTION\n\nAlthough a good memory is one of the factors inthe complex of mental capacities that make upintelligence,phenomenal feats of memory areoccasionally encountered in settings of mentalretardation.  A client with such skills wasreferred to the occupational therapy departmentfor assessment and treatment,and his case wasrecorded and documented.  \nThe feats of the Savant Syndrome involve rotememory,the capacity to retain and reproducedata verbatim,and are frequently accompaniedby some creative ability.These skills are mostcommonly found in infantile autistic disorder.The diagnostic criteria listed by DSM-III-R 1 forthis condition include qualitative impairment inreciprocal social interaction,like marked lack ofawareness of the existence of feelings of others;dysfunction in seeking comfort in times ofdistress,in imitation and in social play;as wellas gross impairment in the ability to make peerfriendships.There is also qualitative impairmentin verbal and non verbal communication,and inimaginative ability.The repertoire of activitiesand interests is significantly restricted andmanifested by stereotyped body movements;persistent preoccupation with parts of objects;marked distress over changes in trivial aspects ofthe environment;  unreasonable insistence onfollowing routines in detail;and a markedlyrestricted range of interests as well as apreoccupation with one narrow interest.  \nKaplan,Freedman and Sadock²opine hat it islikely that the few gifted individuals with theSavant Syndrome are not really retarded personsbut schizophrenics who are protecting themselves  \nfrom human contact with a facade ofpseudoidiocy.DSM-III-R,however,states that ifthe criteria for autistic disorder are met,theadditional diagnosis of schizophrenia should onlybe made in the rare instances in which prominentdelusions or hallucinations meeting the criteria ofschizophrenia can be documented.  \n## THE SAVANT SYNDROME\n\nOriginally known as the idiot savant,this termwas coined by a combination of the now obsoletebut once accepted classification level of mentalretardation,idiot,with the word savant,aknowledgeable person,derived from the Frenchword savoir,meaning to know.It started beingused a century ago to describe mentallyhandicapped persons in whom some conspicuousarea of ability,skill or knowledge stood inmarked contrast to an otherwise very limitedintellectual capacity.  \nToday,the condition can be defined as a rare butremarkable state in which someone with a seriousmental handicap,  resulting either fromdevelopmental disability or from major mentalillness,has spectacular aspects of mentalcapabilities standing in stark and markedincongruous comparison to the handicap.In thetalented savants,the skills are remarkably simplein contrast to the handicap.In the prodigioussavant,the abilities would be spectacular even ifthey occurred in a normal person 3.  \n\n| J.Busuttil,MSc,Dip.OT  \u003Cbr>Senior Occupational Therapist,  \u003Cbr>Mount Carmel Hospital,  \u003Cbr>Attard.   |\n| --- |\n\nAmong the listed skills to be found among thesavants,one encounters mechanical ability;lightning calculation,mathematical ability;calendar calculating;artistic talent like paintingand drawing;extraordinary mnemonic skills;and musical abilities.
