The preface outlines the author’s route from the Ionian Islands and continental Greece through Egypt up the Nile to the Second Cataract, then crossing from Damietta to Jaffa and traveling through Syria and Palestine, including lands east of the Jordan and Anti-Libanus. It describes the intent to publish direct observations in an unpretending, practical style for travelers and scholars.","# TRAVELS\n\nPALESTINE AND SYRIA. \nGEORGE ROBINSON,EsQ. \nILLUSTRATED WITH public le tribut de son activité.etdevrait s'efforcer de laisser quelque trace honorable deson existence.\" \nTHE Author of the present volumes, after passing the summer of the year 1828amidst the most beautiful provinces ofSpain, and the winter of the same year inthe south of Italy, was induced by an ac-cidental solicitation of friendship,to visitthe Ionian Islands in the spring of 1829.But the vicinity of these islands to Conti-nental Greece, the Peloponnesus, and theArchipelago held out temptations, for amore extended gratification of his curiosity, too strong to be resisted. He yielded; \nand having had the unexpected good for-tune of traversing these regions of beautyand of desolation without encountering asingle hinderance,or once experiencinga moment's uneasiness, either for the safetyof his person or his purse, this suiecess im-boldened him to look, with an aspiring eye,and high hopes, towards the more interest-ing countries lying deeper in the East, forthe visiting of which he prepared himselfduring the winter months he spent atSmyrna \nAccordingly in the early part of the fol-lowing year(1830)he embarked for Egyptby the first opportunity which presenteditself, where his excursions up the Nile ex-tended to the Second Cataract. On hisreturn to the shores of the Mediterranean,he crossed the sea from Damietta to Jaffa;and having visited the whole of Syria andPalestine, including the countries lyingeast of the Jordan and the Anti-Libanus,wintered in Aleppo. In the spring andsummer of 1831,he wandered over the \nPREFACE. \nmore interesting parts of Asia Minor andreached Constantinople in the fall of thesame year.In 1832 he returned home towestern Europe by way of Adrianople,Salonica,Thessaly, and Athens, enteringthe port of Ancona the 29th of May,1832;“—longæ finis chartæque viæeque”—an exact cycle of three years having re-volved since he embarked,on the verysame day, from Otranto for Corfu. \nSuch is the brief outline of a tour,dilat-ing itself from an intended period of a fewwecks to as many years, and undertakenoriginally with no other object in view thanthat of gratifying personal curiosity.Theauthor can, indeed, with sincerity disclaimever having entertained the remotest notionof putting in type his notes and observa-tions at the time he made them;confessingwith cheerfulness, that however much hemay have travelled for his own amusementand instruction,he esteems his own qualifications in many ways inadequate, towardsfurnishing proper data for the solution or \nelucidation of qucstions, which concern ina higher degree the Geographer and Ar-chaiologist. \nHis sole object in publishing the presentvolumes has been the desire of being use-ful to society,by imparting,in a simpleand imbodied form, his own direct andpersonal observations and notices of coun-tries,which lie buried at present under theworks of a hundred authors;and it will befound that very few travellers have madeso complete and extensive a tour of theLevant as it has happened to himself tohave done. For this reason, too,as wellas the specific and undigressive style inwhich the narration is carried on,theauthor is imboldened to think, his workwill not be without great convenience tothose upon actual travel:well remember-ing the grievous encumbrance of hugevolumes,as references on the way, whichhe humbly considers are much better con-sulted in the seclusion of a library, than onthe high road from Jerusalem to Damascus. \nWith respect to the subject-matter ofthe work,no one can be more fully awareof its simple and unpretending qualities, than the author himself;who is preparedto incur blame and objection from many, for being silent, where there existed somuch to enkindle the imagination, andwhere so many opportunities were givenfor
