The story contrasts familiar Danish sights with the wide, rolling prairie landscape, explains how homesteads shaped the family’s move, and builds suspense through the ice crack and the wagon sinking. a New World \nIt had been a long, exhausting trip from \nCopenhagen,Denmark,to our new home on theCanadian Prairies.First we had sailed into NewYork, and then we took the train to Alberta.Forthe final part of the journey,we rode in wagons. \nPapa drove the wagon that Mama,my sisters,Katherine and Marie, and I rode in.The roadswere bumpy, but our wagon had seats that madethe ride a bit more comfortable. \nUncle Peter drove the other wagon.Mybrothers,Christoffer and Ulrik, walked alongside. \nThere was stillsnow on the ground, and Icould see steam rising from the backs of theoxen and horses. It also looked as thoughsteam was coming out of their noses.TheCanadian Prairies were a huge change frommy hometown,Copenhagen. Our new homeon the Prairies did not have sailing ships, fancycarriages,or tall buildings on cobbled streetsas Copenhagen did.Instead, there were rollinghills as far as we could see.Papa called it afarmer's paradise. \nPapa and Uncle Peter had both been sailorsin Copenhagen. One day Uncle Peter read aboutthe Canadian government offering homesteadsin the western provinces. \nHomesteads were plots of land for a familyhome and a farm.Uncle Peter told Papa aboutit, and shortly after,my family prepared tomove across the world. \nI could hardly wait to get to the house wehad rented near our homestead.Every part ofmy body seemed to ache. \nWhen we could see a frozen river ahead,Papa called out,“There it is!Our house is juston the other side of that river.\" \nIt's hard to explain the excitement we all felt.I saw a smile on everyone's face and tears inMama's eyes. \nUncle Peter crossed the river with the lighterwagon first. As he crossed, the horses hesitated atthe sound of the ice cracking under their hooves.Uncle Peter made it across, and then it was ourturn.I hoped the ice would hold up for us too. \nPapa told Christoffer and Ulrik to speak loudlyas we crossed the river. This way the oxen wouldn'thear the ice cracking and get frightened.Mybrothers started to sing at the top of their voices. \nAs we started crossing the river, the ice beganto splinter.Suddenly we heard a loud crack.Ourwagon began to sink into the river, and waterwas creeping up over the sides! \n# Chapter 2\n\nA Dip in the Red Deer River \nIhe oxen continued to walk toward the \nriverbank,so we were hopeful we would still makeit across. But it was no use.The wagon began totip over, spilling us into the ice-cold water. \nI saw Katherine and Marie frantically grabthe sides of the wagon and hold on,so I did thesame.I had never felt water this cold before. \nChristoffer and Ulrik got the oxen onto theriverbank. My brothers waited there, soakingwet and shivering, while Papa came to get
