logged onto the AlJazeera English (AJE)news channel for online coverage as often as tentimes a day.Al Jazeera's reporting far surpassed that of any American tel-evision network, with its focus on people passionately committed to top-pling repressive regimes. As a journalist and journalism professor,it wasnatural that I focused on the brave and stubborn souls determined to showthe world what was happening.Mostly Egyptians or other Arabs, with ascattering of Westerners, these men and women faced arrest, harassment, beatings, and in some cases torture for disseminating the news.I especiallysingle out the Al Jazeera correspondents.Their offices were burned, theirequipment confiscated, and their internet access shut down.Still, they keptthat vital story\"on the air\"for weeks. \nThis is what journalists do,when they are doing their job the way itis supposed to be done.Get the story and get it out,no matter what theobstacles,no matter what the threats. Many die in that effort. Many otherssuffer, either directly,as autocrats use all in their power to stifle them, orindirectly, from the psychological effects of witnessing,close-up,day afterday, the awful suffering of others.I have many memories that will nevergo away.Counting bodies in South Korea or Lebanon,so the AssociatedPress(AP)could report accurately the number of dead in this clash or thatbattle.“Counting”doesn't mean numbers to me,it means seeing close-upthe torn bodies of men and women and children lying in the sun,and smell-ing the never-forgotten,sweetly horrible smell of human
