fruitplantations. The injury to garden crops is chiefly caused by the surface tunnelsthey make directly beneath the rows of seeds or seedling plants. These tunnelscut off the moisture supply, either preventing seed germination or killing theyoung seedling plants. On lawns the damage is largely one of disfigurement, the small heaps of earth from subterranean tunnels marring greatly the appear-ance of the turf.In strawberry and raspberry patches the tunnelling under theplants breaks many of the small feeder roots and leaves air pockets beneath theplants which cut off moisture and prevent the roots from functioning properly. There is consequently a lack of vitality, which leaves the plants more susceptibleto other injury.Damage in hay and grain fields consists largely of injury tomowing machines cutting into the mounds of earth. \nMany current bcliefs regarding the habits of moles are without foundation.By many it is thought that their operations are limited to seasons and to certainhours of the day.Observation has proved this to be incorrect. They are activeat all hours of the day and night and at all seasons of the year.Climatic con-ditions,especially moisture, have the greatest effect on whether they work nearthe surface or at a greater depth. When the surface is moist operations aremore likely to be only a few inches deep.Another wrong impression is thatmoles will avoid places in their tunnels that have been touched by human hands. Results from trapping, where the hands are to some extent used to dig out theholes in which to set the traps, have sufficiently demonstrated that the humantouch does not act as a repelent. \nAccording to the United States Farmers'Bulletin,No.1247,“moles are verylargely insectivorous and in this respect are beneficial to man.The bulk oftheir food consists largely of earth worms and white grubs. At times a trace ofvegetable matter is found in their stomachs, but such injury as occurs to bulbsand root crops from eating is the work of mice, rats, and other rodents whichinhabit the runways. No system of control has proved as satisfactory as trap-ping.” \nThere are chiefly two types of burrows. The surface tunnels made in loosecultivated soil and the deeper tunnels made under sod or in hard earth. The cul-tivated soil near the surface is soft and can readily be pushed aside by the moleswithout mounds of earth being thrown up.A small ridge is the indication oftheir presence.A mole during a night will,at times, travel up to 200 feet inthis type of runway. In the majority of cases this runway is used only once. \nDOMINION EXPERIMENTALFARMSircular No.67.4E.S.ARCHIBALD,B.A.,B.S.A.,LL.D.,Director. \n2 \nTunnels made at greater depths are used as main roads and it is in these thattrapping is most succesful. They are indicated by the mounds of earth thrownup at irregular intervals. \nThe type of trap which has been used to the greatest extent on the AgassizExperimental Farm and which has proved satisfactory in every way is soldcommercially under the trade name of the English Mole Trap.It is of simpleconstruction and easily manipulated. The runways are usually a few inchesto one side of the centre of the hill, and the direction can be determined byseraping aside the earth and fecling with the fingers. The best tool to make ahole sufficiently large to admit the trap.and it.should be made no larger,is anordinary garden trowel. The trap should be so set that the jaws are on eithcrside of the runway, since any obstruction in the middle is likely to cause themole to deviate to one side or the other and thus go around the trap, eitherspringing it without being caught or not springing it at ","cbCaiear6YGdmKfO","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiear6YGdmKfO","pdf",532530,"English","# TRAPPING
