Please do not read this to the students. This is a description for teachers, about the big ideas and key understanding that students should take away after completing this task.\nBig Ideas and Key Understandings\nA competent leader can help the team overcome obstacles\nEven difficult problems have solutions\nPerseverance and commitment help achieve impossible goals\nSynopsis\nA crew of sailors captained by Sir Ernest Shackleton is trying to reach the South Pole’s ice cap when their ship, Endurance, is blocked by the ice and is crushed by moving ice a month later. The crew camps on the ice and then Shack decides they should travel in lifeboats to Elephant Island and then from there to the whaling station on South Georgia Island. The crew is then split up between the ones who can travel to South Georgia Island and those who will stay on Elephant Island. Both groups faced many struggles. Shack gets to the whaling station and then goes back to rescue the rest of his men.\nRead entire main selection text, keeping in mind the Big Ideas and Key Understandings.\nReread the main selection text while noting the stopping points for the Text Dependent Questions and teaching Vocabulary.\nDuring Teaching\nStudents read the entire main selection text independently.\nTeacher reads the main selection text aloud with students following along. (Depending on how complex the text is and the amount of support needed by students, the teacher may choose to reverse the order of steps 1 and 2.)\nStudents and teacher re-read the text while stopping to respond to and discuss the questions and returning to the text. A variety of methods can be used to structure the reading and discussion (i.e.: whole class discussion, think-pair-share, independent written response, group work, etc.)\nText Dependent Questions\nText Dependent Questions\nAnswers\nReread pages 522-524. How is the story organized? What evidence from the text helps the reader understand the structure?\nThe story is written in chronological order. The dates range from October 27, 1915 to May 20, 1916. It is written in journal format because there is a date and information and accounts from the day written underneath.\nHow do the events on page 522 these events impact Shackleton?\nHe was not going to be able to accomplish this goal because the Endurance was trapped in giant blocks of ice that would eventually crush the ship. His new goal was for his men’s survival.\nReread page 524. The author states, “It was what they feared.” What were the sailors afraid of and why?\nThe sailors were afraid of the sound of crushing wood. That sound meant that the ice was breaking the wood on the outside of the ship. This scared them because they knew the Endurance was going to sink into the water after the wood was crushed. They would not have their ship to get them off the ice.\nNote to teacher: Teach the students how to read around the sentence in question to understand the meaning. Tell your students, “When the author writes it, they are referring to a noun already mentioned.” Only use this if the students are unable to find the answer independently.\nPersonification is giving human qualities to an object or idea.\nThe author writes, “She was gone forever, swallowed by the Weddell Sea.” What does this sentence mean?\nThe sea would swallow up a ship like a mouth swallows food. The hole in the ice (like the mouth) opened up and the ship went right down (food going into the mouth). When something is being swallowed it is no longer visible and gone forever.\nWhat was the crew waiting for and why? (Pg. 525)\nThe text states, “The crew would have to wait for the ice, mov","cbCaif4cqm8KI9g0","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaif4cqm8KI9g0","doc",91648,15,"English","# Teacher Instructions\n# Big Ideas and Key Understandings\n# Synopsis\n# During Teaching\n# Text Dependent Questions\n## Answers","[{\"question\":\"What are the lesson’s Big Ideas and Key Understandings?\",\"answer\":\"A competent leader helps the team overcome obstacles; even difficult problems have solutions; perseverance and commitment help achieve impossible goals.\"},{\"question\":\"How is the story organized in the text?\",\"answer\":\"It is written in chronological order with dates ranging from October 27, 1915 to May 20, 1916, and it uses a journal format with daily accounts listed under each date.\"},{\"question\":\"What does the quote “She was gone forever, swallowed by the Weddell Sea” mean?\",\"answer\":\"The sea swallows the ship as a mouth swallows food: the hole opens and the ship goes down, and being swallowed means it is no longer visible and is “gone forever.”\"}]","Trapped by the Ice! - Lesson - Basal | DOC",1792132426,23]
