Common Milkweed (Asclepia syriaca) latex is linked with wart treatment, while roots and leaves are referenced for cough suppression and use for typhus fever and asthma; young shoots are cooked and flower buds boiled for soup. Wild Onion (Allium canadense) highlights vitamin content and broad medicinal claims such as digestive toning, circulatory support, and effects on blood pressure and cholesterol. The section also covers Shooting Star (Dodecatheon meadia), Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), Wild Strawberry (Fragaria virginiana), Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis), Yellow Coneflower (Ratibida pinnata), and Annual Sunflower (Helianthus annuus), including habitat notes and remedies for ailments.","Common Milkweed Asclepia syriaca \nThe milky latex was used to treat warts. Infusions of the roots and leaves were taken to suppress coughs and used to treat typhus fever and asthma. The young leaves and shoots can be cooked and eaten like a green and the flower buds can be boiled to make a soup. \nWild Onion \nAllium canadense \nWild Onion is high in Vitamins A and C. It is also rich in potassium, calcium, manganese, and selenium. The whole plant is anti-asthmatic, blood purifier, carminative, cathartic, diuretic, expectorant, hypotensive, stimulant and vasodilator. Raw root can be eaten to reduce blood pressure and also to ease shortness of breath. Wild onion contains Sulphur compounds and when added to the diet on a regular basis they help reduce blood cholesterol levels, act as a tonic to the digestive system and also tonify the circulatory system. \nShooting Star \nDodecatheon meadia \nThis perennial plant consists of a basal rosette of leaves, from which emerges one or more stalks of flowers. Each flower has 5 petals that are pointed upward, converging at the base of the flower. The petals are white, light pink, or rosy pink. Shooting Stars are an ephemeral wildflower that bloom early, marking the beginning of spring. Many states list \nDodecatheon meadia as a rare or endangered species \nPurple Cone Flower Echinacea purpurea \nPurple Coneflower can grow up to 3½feet tall. The light green stems have small purple streaks and scattered white hairs. The leaves are up to 6\" long and 3\"across, becoming smaller as they ascend the stems. Upper stems end in individual flower heads spanning about 2½-4\"across. Theseflower heads have longflowering stalks up to 8 inches long. Each daisy-like flower head has 10-20 ray florets that surround a large central cone of numerous disk florets. The central cone is yellowish brown to reddish brown, somewhat flattened, and very prickly. The rays are purple, narrowly oblong, and they tend to droop downward. In bright sunlight, the flower heads are mildly fragrant. Purple Coneflower is used as an analgesic and to treat symptoms and shorten the duration of colds. \nWild Strawberry Fragaria virginiana \nStrawberry is a giftfrom the Creator. Stories passed down tell of the strawberry’s healing power of forgiveness, kindness and taking responsibility for one’s actions. Wild strawberry grows 4 to 8 inches high and spreads out into large patches by means of runners. The stems spread out horizontally over the ground and can root where they come in contact with the soil. New shoots will be formed at the point where rooting occurs. \nCardinal Flower Lobelia cardinalis \nThe brilliant red blossoms of Cardinal-Flower are present from July through October. Each flower may be two inches long. This plant naturally grows in marshes, wet meadows, wet prairies and along streams, ponds and lakes. Leaves are arranged alternately on the stem. The leaves and stem are usuallyfuzzy. A single leaf may be up to eight inches long and two and one-half inches wide. The dried roots are used to treat stomach aches. The leave are used to treat coldsand fevers. Cardinal flower can be used as a substitute or replacementfor tobacco. \nYellow Cone Flower Ratibida pinnata \nYellow Coneflower can grow up to 4' tall while in flower. The daisy-like flowers occur at the top of the tall stems. Each composite flower has up to 13 drooping yellow ray florets spanning 1-2½\" across, and an oblong head of disk florets that is about ½–¾\" tall when mature. \nThe head of Yellow Coneflower is initially lightgreen or grey, but later becomes dark brown. The blooming period occursfrom early to late summer, and lasts about 1-2 months. The seed head releases an anise scent \n\n| Broadleaf Cattail Typha latifolis\u003Cbr>The pollen is hemostatic & a mildly diuretic.
