This portion of the story of Zenopus actually begins 50 years ago on a cold wintry night. \nOver the long period of time that Zenopus spent excavating under the tower, and researching lost secrets, he became obsessed with the notion that there was some dark and hidden arcane knowledge lost in the ruins below the tower. Oneof his first discoveries was a lost idol of Moloch, a huge stone statue built anciently in connection with the worship of the arch devil (for more information on Moloch see Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes) . This cult has long been forgotten among humans, but there are monstrous beings that seek out Moloch as a deity figure in their shamanistic practices. This ancient statue that Zenopus found was well preserved and still had the original huge red quartz gemstones set in the eye sockets. The vast majority of other statues of the era, are missing the gemstones, long ago taken by thieves and temple looters. \nZenopus marveled at the workmanship of the huge idol and felt a mysterious need to protect it and keep it safe. Not long after, he discovered a 7 mile long passage that leads all the way to the edge of the marshlands to the west. On several occasions trolls wandered down the passage. At first, Zenopus placed a guard in the passage, but he soon learned that his guards were no match for the troublesome trolls. As if that was not enough, a band of lizardfolk found the passage as well. He then used his magic to block the tunnel in several places, and set another guard in place. This seems to have been effective, at least shortterm. \nFearing the blocked tunnel may not be enough to keep out wandering creatures from the marsh, Zenopus began excavation in a separate area \ndirectly under the tower. Here, he built an \nextensive laboratory in which he could safely and secretly carry on his research and experimentation. As Zenopus aged, he noticed that he was beginning to forget things that he previously knew; simple things like where his laboratory was located, and other mundane things, some as simple as completing daily maintenance. He would forget where he was and find himself days later, missing the time and unable to account for his own whereabouts. All too often, he found himself at the feet of the idol of Moloch. This both concerned Zenopus and awakened a new curiosity within him. \nHaving concluded that it must be some unforeseen destiny granted him by some powerful and distant entity, Zenopus began preparations","cbCail8hOlsLzX43","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCail8hOlsLzX43","pdf",733567,"English","# Introduction\n# Ghosts of Saltmarsh\n# Credits\n# Background\n# Annex Levels","[{\"question\":\"What materials are required to run the adventure?\",\"answer\":\"The document specifies obtaining an original Basic D\\u0026D rulebook (1977 print with certain later reprints), or a previously purchased licensed WOTC PDF, or a free PDF containing the Sample Dungeon pages 40–45, plus access to the Ruined Tower of Zenopus content.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the Tower of Zenopus connect to Ghosts of Saltmarsh?\",\"answer\":\"It states that when used with the Ghosts of Saltmarsh module, the adventure focuses on the area known as the Tower of Zenopus, referenced on the map on page 23 of that publication.\"},{\"question\":\"Why is Zenopus associated with the idol of Moloch?\",\"answer\":\"Zenopus finds a well-preserved idol of Moloch with red quartz gemstones still set in the eyes, becomes compelled to protect it, and later seeks contact with Moloch via a devilish summoning ritual.\"},{\"question\":\"What happens after Zenopus opens the gate to Hell?\",\"answer\":\"A hellish green flame engulfs the dungeons, passages, sea caves, and the tower for less than an hour, after which all falls silent and dark.
