a quaint and autocraticfather.The elder Lautrec's consuming passions in lifewere hunting and extravagant,story-book costume.For his son he outlined at an early date a program of  \n4923SDL:C一BK  \n2 becameclear he could never endure a strenuous physical life.  \nLautrec's bones never mended properly,and hisphysical deformity-a fully-developed torso on puny,shrunken legs-always made him an object of publiccuriosity.He found refuge,and artistic inspiration aswell,in the music halls of Montmartre which he be-gan to frequent shortly after his arrival in Paris in1884.From that date until his death in 1901 he wasa familiar figure in the various cafés chantants,caba-rets,and dance halls where he had a special table andobserved and steadily sketched the performingclowns,dancers,and singers.In this milieu he wasaccepted without repugnance and was enjoyed for hisfacetious talk and bubbling high spirits.In the tenyears of artistic maturity between 1889 and 1899,heproduced a prodigious number of drawings,litho-graphs,posters,and paintings.His appetite for workwas matched by a fierce appetite for life which onlyMontmartre fleshpots seemed able to satisfy.Ruinousdissipation finally produced a
