Asso-ciation..Pro-Family Forum...FamilyFriendly Libraries.In addition to theirvigorous promotion of the ubiquitousf-word,these organizations have a fewother things in common.All reflectcultural and political viewpoints of theReligious Right,and allare engaged ina variety of attacks on public libraries.All believe that it should be they—notlibrarians,not other parents,not libraryboards—who decide what you andyour children read.  \nFamily Friendly Libraries,the newest ofthese groups,affects a non-censoriousattitude.Founded in 1992 by Karen JoGounaud,the organization claims it isnot in the business of dictating collec-tion development policies or advocat-ing removal of material.\"We're notsaying don't buy it,\"says Gounaud.“We're not saying get rid of it.Just putit on a special shelf.\"However,an ex-amination of the FFL's Vision Statementreveals a strong bias against the free-dom-to-read-policies of the AmericanLibrary Association as well as a toutingof cultural values that are,to say theleast,exclusive and restrictive in theirpresumptions.  \nHow does Family Friendly Libraries,forexample,define \"family\"?In the FFLVision Statement,Article One(“Tradi-tional Family Emphasis\")directs that“the library will acknowledge the im-portance and superiority of the tradi-tional family—mother and father mar-  \nJune 1996  \nried to each other,committed to a life-time monogamous relationship and tocaring responsibly together for theirchildren.\"Further,\"While providinghelpful resources to non-traditionalfamilies (such as single parent house-holds,families 'blended'after divorceor death,etc.)...the standard of em-phasizing traditional family and rel-evant values will not be forgotten.\"(italics mine).  \nJan Day,director of the WoodbridgeTown Library and chair of CLA's Intel-lectual Freedom Committee,says,“What bothers me is that the so-calledtraditional values these groups promoteare in fact strictly defined by quasi-po-litical,religious agendas.\"(Althoughthe FFL's Vision Statement does not usereligion-specific terminology,founderKaren Jo Gounaud has described her-self as a“Christian family values activ-ist.\")\"Family Friendly Libraries at-tempts to define a library system's'common values'and the 'traditionalfamily'it serves,\"Day continues,\"butin fact each community is different.\"  \nThe latest(3rd)edition of the aptly-named American Heritage Dictionaryprovides 11 definitions for the word\"family.\"The first meaning is dividedinto two parts:“A fundamental socialgroup in society typically consisting ofa man and woman and their offspring”and,alternatively,\"Two or morepeople who share goals and values,have long-term commitments to oneanother and reside usually in the samedwelling place.\"  \n##
