Introduction: Torikaebayamonogatari, space and time \nJapanese fic􀀉on in its various forms occupies a peculiar posi􀀉on within the global cultural landscape. In the West, this takes the form of a con􀀉nuedtradi􀀉on of appropria􀀉on and hybridisa􀀉on that pop culture scholar Susan J. Napier (2007) discusses as having its first boom during the 19th century, when the Tokugawa shogunate and its successor state, the Meiji regime, opened their doors to the Western powers. Since then, millenary text corpora have been integrated into the Western-dominated global flux of crea􀀉vity in numerous ways through the decades: Japonisme in late 19th century plas􀀉c arts, the golden age of Japanese cinema in the 50s or the ongoing boom of manga and anime that started in the 90s are some examples. \naccessibility of these texts (most obviously translators \nand publishers, but also academics, writers and other ar􀀉sts) manipulate the texts in ways both perceivable and unperceivable, condi􀀉oning our rela􀀉onship with them. By producing new deriva􀀉ve texts, these agents create actualised readings and perspec􀀉ves on the original, which can be used to be􀀰er understand contemporary society. \nFor understanding this, the Torikaebaya monogatari is a perfect case of study. This Heian-era (794-1185 AD) tale is o􀀷en categorised as a giko monogatari (lit. pseudo-classical tale), a term created in the 19th century to designate imita􀀉ve monogatari from the late Heian period onwards¹. Beginning in the 70s, it has been translated into German, English, Russian, French and Spanish, and has been adapted into several manga series and two Takarazuka Revue plays. Furthermore, echoes of its narra􀀉ve and cultural impact can be no􀀉ced in the work of cult authors such as Yukio Mishima as well as in big-budget anime studio produc􀀉ons, namely the 2016 blockbuster Your Name. (Kimi no na wa, dir. Makoto Shinkai) . This coexistence of mul􀀉ple interpreta􀀉ons of a single source text allows us to contrast the differences in style and treatment of the source text that the derived products present, which, in turn, leads us to ques􀀉on why these changes take place and what objec􀀉ves they pursue. \n1 While its affilia􀀉on to this category has been disputed by some scholars, contemporary English, French and Spanish transla􀀉ons dub it as such, as does suppor􀀉ng literature. In any case, it must be considered that Torikaebayamonogatari does indeed borrow from Genji monogatari and preexis􀀉ng Heian literary tradi􀀉on to a high degree. \n[asiademica.com](asiademica.com) \n402 \nWri􀀰en at some point during the 12th century, the tale was well-received by its contemporary audiences, as judged by its cri􀀉que found in the Mumyōzōshi. Coincidentally, the Mumyōzōshi cri􀀉que also reveals that the Torikaebaya monogatari we know today, or Ima torikaebaya, is actually a rework of an older text now lost wri􀀰en several decades before, referred to as Furu torikaebaya. While not nearly as ubiquitous as its par􀀉al source of inspira􀀉on Genji monogatari, the Torikaebaya has intrigued and amused scholars and general public alike for its peculiar depic􀀉on of gender, sex and courtship in the Heian period well enough to survive to this day and experience a recent spike in popularity. \nA􀀷er a period of limited discussion and circula􀀉on marked by a censo","cbCaihQ75etk4s3I","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihQ75etk4s3I","pdf",328407,26,"English","# Introduction: Torikaebayamonogatari, space and time\n## Theoretical framework\n## Translation vs Adaptation","[{\"question\":\"What is Torikaebaya monogatari, and why is it significant for this study?\",\"answer\":\"It is a Heian-era tale often classified as a pseudo-classical giko monogatari.
