The narrative follows Meena as she navigates everyday life, demonstrating her intelligence and courage. A significant portion of the story focuses on Meena's distress upon learning that her cousin Rita, who is only 15 years old and wishes to continue her education, is to be married to the village shopkeeper's son, Babu. Meena seeks help from her grandmother, who recounts her own traumatic experience of early marriage. Despite the grandmother's pleas, Rita's father is hesitant to refuse the proposal due to the perceived benefits of the match, as Babu is studying to be a doctor.
