After hospital tests in Apia reveal abnormal blood counts, the doctor diagnoses leukaemia and recommends treatment in New Zealand. The family separates for care: Tomasi travels with his mother to Auckland while his father stays in Samoa. At Starship Children’s Hospital, Tomasi faces tests and needles yet finds support from family, nurses, and friends through calls, visits, and messages of prayer.","Tomasi’s Journey Jane Va’afusuaga Wong Chiu Tuipoloa \nTomasi was just like any other boy in his village. He woke up early every day to do his chores and then walked to school with his friends. Tomasi played rugby every Saturday and on Sundays, he went to church with his family. \nJust after his ninth birthday, Tomasi began to feel tired a lot. He started to have nosebleeds and bad headaches. He didn’t feel like playing rugby anymore . Tomasi’s parents were worried, so they took him to the hospital in Apia for a checkup. \nThe doctor examined Tomasi and saw he was pale and had bruises on his arms and legs. He said Tomasi would have to stay overnight at the hospital so he could do some tests. When Tomasi saw the needle for the blood test, he felt scared. He held Mum’s hand and squeezed it tightly. Tomasi had a chest xray then a CT scan . He had to lie very still while a big machine took photos of his head. \nThe doctor told Tomasi and his parents that Tomasi’s blood tests showed there was something wrong with his blood. He didn’t have enough red cells and had too many white ones which looked abnormal. The doctor said that Tomasi had leukaemia which was a type of blood cancer . Tomasi’s mum cried and Tomasi cried too. The doctor said that Tomasi would have to travel to New Zealand for treatment. \nThe family decided that Tomasi would goto New Zealand with his Mum, and his Dad would stay in Samoa to look after his younger brothers and sisters. Tomasi had photos taken for his passport. When he helped Mum pack the suitcases, he felt scared and excited at the same time. The whole family came to the airport to say goodbye. It was the first time that Tomasi had been on an aeroplane. He looked out the window at the clouds, ate a \nmeal and watched two movies. \nWhen Tomasi and his mum arrived in Auckland, Aunty Peka was at the airport to meet them. The first thing Tomasi noticed was that the sun was shining, but it was cold. Aunty Peka drove Tomasi and Mum straight to Starship Children’s Hospital in the city. She drove really fast, all the cars went fast here . Tomasi looked out the window at all the traffic and tall buildings. \nTomasi had his own room at the hospital and Mum was allowed to stay with him. They liked to sit on the bed and look out the window at the Sky Tower . The doctors and nurses were kind, but Tomasi didn’t like any of the tests or needles. He slept and rested a lot and sometimes he felt well enough to play with some of the other children in the ward. \nAunty Peka brought some of Tomasi’s cousins to visit him in hospital, but he really missed his Dad and his brothers and sisters at home in Samoa. Mum let him use her phone to call them almost every night. Dad would say, “We’re all praying for you, Son. Be strong.”Tomasi’s friends at school sent him cards and letters.","cbCaim2hsaJpEVDv","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaim2hsaJpEVDv","pdf",1684139,1,19,"English","en",105,"# Tomasi’s Symptoms and Diagnosis\n# Treatment Plans and Travel to New Zealand\n# Life at Starship Children’s Hospital\n# Support from Family and Friends","[{\"question\":\"What symptoms lead to Tomasi visiting the hospital?\",\"answer\":\"Tomasi becomes very tired and develops nosebleeds and bad headaches, which prompts his parents to take him for a checkup.\"},{\"question\":\"What diagnosis does Tomasi receive, and what does it mean for treatment?\",\"answer\":\"Blood tests show abnormal blood cells, and the doctor diagnoses leukaemia, a type of blood cancer, requiring treatment in New Zealand.\"},{\"question\":\"How does Tomasi’s family organize support after the diagnosis?\",\"answer\":\"Tomasi travels to New Zealand with his mother, while his father stays in Samoa to look after younger siblings.
