AvenueRICHMOND,VA. \n## Tolerance and Intolerance.\n\nA great deal is being said in the newspapersthese days about religious toleranee. My dailypaper today carried a front page article inwhich John W.Davis, former candidate forthe presidency, was exhorting Protestants toexereise tolerance towards Jews and Catho-lies.Another front page article told of adinner which was held in Richmond and towhich 150 Protestants,150 Jews and 150 Cath-olies were invited. The object of the meetingwas to cultivate good will and tolerance.TheGovernor of the State made them an addresson the subject. On the editorial page therewas a long editorial exhorting us to toler-ance.This one paper gives but a sample ofthe many articles which are being publishedon tolerance and intolerance. The gist of allthese artieles is that the Protestants of Americaat this time are exceedingly guilty of intoler-ance towards Jews and Catholies, but especiallytowards Catholies. \nTHIS EDITORIALby W.L.Lingle,Co-Editor of The Presbyterian ofthe South, appeared in the issueof February 29,1928.Because of greatdemand for it,it was republished onMay 16th. \nOn May 28th it was published in theCongressional Record by unanimous con-sent of the United States Senate. \nIt has also been republished in a num-ber of other Church Papers and in theVirginia Masonic Journal,May,1928. \nIn this pamphlet form it may be ordered fromTHE PRESBYTERIAN OF THE soUTH3910 Seminary AvenueRICHMOND,VA. \n## What Is Tolerance?\n\nIt strikes me that there is a lot of looseand foolish talking and writing these days onthe subject of tolerance.Perhaps it is done \nfor politieal effect;I do not know of anyother reason why it should be doneWhat dothey mean by tolerance?.They seem to meanhedthat everybody must eonsider one religion justas good and just as true as another.Thesewriters do not seem to leave any room fordeep and abiding religious convietions.Tothem toleranee means full approval \nI have just looked up the definition of theword toleranee in an unabridged dictionary. Here is the definition I found:\"Allowanceof that which is not wholly approved,es-pecially allowance of religious opinions andmodes of worship contrary to,or differentfrom, those of the Established Chureh or be-lief;recognition of the right of private judg-ment,especially as to religious matters.” \nIf the foregoing is anything like a correctdeinition, then I am sure that I do not knowany Protestants who are intolerant towardsJews or Catholies. We believe that the Jew-ish religion is fatally defective in that itleaves Christ out.We believe that the RomanCatholie Church has added many things in itsgovernment,in its doctrines, and in its wor-ship which are not found in the Holy Serip-tures,and that it has departed a long wayfrom New Testament Christianity. At thesame time we believe that the Jews and Catho-lies have the full right to worship God accord- \ning to their own eonvictions, with no one tomolest or to make them afraid. As an actualfact they are exereising this right to the full-est.They have their synagogues, churehes andeathedrals allovér the land and worship inthem from week to week with the same free-dom that Protestants have.I do not know ofa Protestant anywhere who would in ","cbCaiibCG1sU5m5d","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiibCG1sU5m5d","pdf",458974,11,"English","# Tolerance and intolerance\n##
