Too much milk, juice, or sugary drinks can “fill up” a toddler. Your toddler may then have a poor appetite and not eat other important foods that would help him or her to grow and be healthy. \n• Toddlers under age 2 years should drink whole milk. They need the extra fat in whole milk for growth. At 2 years, begin fat free or 1% lowfat milk. Talk to your WIC nutritionist or health care provider about reduced fat milk if your toddler is above the 85th percentile weight-for-height. \n• Limit fruit juice to ½ cup or 4 fluid ounces per day. \n• Limit solid fats like butter, margarine, shortening, and lard, as well as foods that contain these ingredients. \nActive Play \nToddlers should play actively each day. Active play includes: running, skipping, climbing, hopping, jumping, throwing a ball, and dancing. Toddlers should not sit still for 1 hour or more at a time, except when sleeping. \nTelevision \nChildren under18 months of age should not watch any television. Children 18 to 24 months of age who watch television should only watch educational, non-violent programs. Parents should watch with their children to help them understand what they are seeing. \nGrowth and Development \n• There are milestones to expect at each age, which may vary with each child. For more information about developmental milestones, [go to cdc.gov/MilestoneTracker](go to cdc.gov/MilestoneTracker). \n• Discuss your child’s growth and development with your child’s health care provider. \nBe Wise...Immunize \nChildren need shots to protect them from disease. Bring each child’s shot record each time you come to WIC. \n[FloridaHealth.gov/WIC](FloridaHealth.gov/WIC) \nMealtime Tips • Parents are responsible for offering toddlers healthy foods at regular mealtimes. \n• Toddlers are responsible for how much food they eat at each meal. \n• Toddlers should be encouraged to try at least one bite of a new food. \n• Toddlers should not be forced to eat certain foods or to eat all of the food they are given at a meal. \nPrevent Tooth Decay \n•Let your toddler begin to drink from a small cup with a spill-proof top. Later, let your toddler practice drinking from a small cup without the spill-proof top. Remember, spills are normal. \n• Toddlers should stop drinking from a bottle by the time they are \n12 to 14 months old. Ask your nutritionist for ideas on how to wean your toddler from the bottle. \n•Do not let your toddlersip juice, milk, or sweet drinks frequently during the day or at bedtime. Instead, you can give your toddler water when he or she is thirsty between meals or at bedtime. \nPrevent Choking \n• Toddlers should always sit up while eating. \n• Toddlers should be told to take small bites and completely chew food before swallowing. \n•Cut soft fruits and cooked vegetables into small pieces—not in round, coin-shaped slices. Remove seeds, pits, and tough skins. \n• Make sure grapes, cherries, berries, and tomatoes are cut into small pieces. \n•Cut hot dogs and sausage-shaped meats into small, thin pieces—not in round, coin-shaped slices. \n• Mash cooked beans. \n• Peanut butter or nut butter can cause choking. Peanut butter or nut butter should only be given when spread thinly on crackers or toast; or thinned and blended into foods. \n• These foods can cause choking and should not be given to your toddler: \nn ice cubes \nn marshmallows \nn hot, sticky breads \nn popcorn, pretzels, and chips \nn large chunks of meat \nn nuts, seeds, peanuts \nn raw vegetables such as carrots and celery \nn raisins and other dried fruit \nn fish, chicken, or turkey with bones \nn gum drops, chewing gum, and round-shaped candies \nBreastfeeding \nBreastfeeding is recommended a","cbCainfIOU4wYcw6","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainfIOU4wYcw6","pdf",1894924,"English","# Toddlers\n## What should my toddler eat and drink?\n## Active Play\n## Television\n## Growth and Development\n## Be Wise...Immunize\n## Mealtime Tips\n## Prevent Tooth Decay\n## Prevent Choking\n## Breastfeeding\n## Daily Food Guide for Toddlers (12 to 24 months)\n## Fruits, Dairy, Protein, Vegetables, Grains\n## Sample Meals for Toddlers","[{\"question\":\"What kinds of foods should a toddler eat each day?\",\"answer\":\"A toddler should eat a variety of foods every day using the Daily Food Guide for Toddlers ages 12 to 24 months.
