comedy.Hisinfluence on later novelists,particularly on Scott and Dickens,wasconsiderable;and although read nowadays less than it deserves to be,it isfrom his work that probably all novels about the sea and the Englishsailor are descended.Smollett draws for us some of the first greatcharacters of the English novel;but also,especially in Humphry Clinker,his masterpiece,leaves us with a gallery of
