There was no \nreason to stall any longer. Yet, Dakota Lord lingered by the door of her condo, keys and phone in hand. She had waited impatiently for this day to come. After her sick leave, her Parisian vacation with Rae, and a short period of desk duty, she was finally cleared to go back in the field. \nIt didn’t mean she’d have to. She still had some paperwork to finish up, and it might be a slow day with no need for her to step in. Dakota hated to admit that she wouldn’t mind. Ease into it. \nNot that she needed it, but it would be welcome. Give it another day. If she didn’t leave now, she would be late. \nShe was aware that her boss, her colleagues, Rae, especially Rae, would watch her closely, and they had a right to do so. After all, she had sworn an oath. She wasn’t supposed to be the one who needed protecting. Dakota made a face in the mirror and left. She took the stairs instead of the elevator—for her health, not to stall more. She greeted a neighbor on her way out and got into her car where she turned the radio up, switching from the news to a music only station. \nNo one needed that kind of negativity so early in the morning. She wasn’t usually one to put her head in the sand, but she needed to be in the right mindset today. Nothing was more important. \nAnd she might have to fool those closest to her, because she wasn’t quite there yet, not one hundred percent. Enough to do the job, Dakota was \ncertain of that. The department shrink agreed too, so that was something. Yet, she couldn’t help feeling there was still a small gap between the status quo and what she wanted it to be, a bit of the darkness lingering. \nThat, too, was normal. It didn’t mean that she had to like it. \nWhen she arrived at the station, she was almost glad that Rae was nowhere to be seen. Dakota loved her, but this was something she needed todo on her own. They were already closer than she had been with anyone in her adult life, something that both thrilled her, and terrified her at times. Rae had been amazing, steadfast, in the aftermath of bad things happening. \nThey would have to officially disclose their relationship sometime soon, since the job required them to work closely together often. \nRae had gone in early this morning after spending the night at Dakota’s. She had asked multiple times if she should wait for the two of them to go together, even though Castillo had scheduled an early meeting with her. \nDakota had turned her down, though now she wondered if the subject of their relationship had come up in said meeting. He certainly knew, and much to his credit, he had given them time when other issues took precedence. Now that Dakota was back on active duty, she didn’t think they could avoid that conversation much longer.
