The publication is tied to the Detroit Institute of Arts’ annual student writing project, expanded to include poetry, prose, criticism, and rap lyrics. literary arts by encouraging students to discover more about themselves and theirworld through great works of art and the discipline of putting their thoughts on paper. \nThis is the sixth year the Detroit Institute of Arts has published a book of student writingsabout art,and each year the project takes on added dimensions.Poetry, prose, and criticism havealways been a part of this undertaking, but this year several entries were in the form of rap lyrics, because as the authors'teacher stated“we feel that rap needs to be influenced by ART!”The“artraps\"don't appear in this book, however,as their authors have been invited to perform them at thereading of student writings about art. \nOther activities have grown out of the student writings book. The reading by the youngauthors of their works has been moved to a larger space to accommodate the overflow crowds ofrecent years. While we can only publish here a limited number of the many entries we receive, theseveral teachers compile their own volumes of their student's efforts.A national textbook publisherhas asked for permission to reprint a poem included in a previous book of student writings, providing amuch wider audience for the work. This year, the museum's Department of Education will offer threeworkshops on creative writing and art to introduce teachers to the successful methods developedduring these annual endeavors. \nNone of this would have been possible without the hard work of Detroit Public Schoolstudents and teachers, and I thank them all for their efforts.I also wish to thank the three jurors whoread the hundreds of entries and selected the writings that appear in this book:Hilda Vest, poet andeditor for Broadside Press;Erma Pritchard, retired Detroit Public School teacher;and IsabelaBasombrio, innovative program coordinator for the museum's Department of Education.JenniferWilliams of the education department coordinated the writings project in conjunction with the 57thAnnual Detroit Public Schools art exhibition;Judith Ruskin of the publications department edited thebook. The publication was designed by Kateri Haney,a Wayne State University graphic designstudent, with the guidance of Professor Judith Moldenhauer. \nhope that the \"thunderous words\"contained in these pages echo through the lives of allwho read them. \n2 \n# these writerswas magnificent and varied, largely dealing with issuesof violence,trauma,self-reflection,and anger.Theserecurring end-of-the-millennium topics are expressed ina highly personal manner, which indicates an innovativeapproach to writing about art that goes beyond meredescription and acquired factual information. In select-ing the work to be published,I focused on the writingsthat presented a personal artistic image yet foretold theanger and sadness that oftentimes accompanies self-reflection and observation of the world. In these cases, visual art became an inspiration for reflecting criticallyon issues affecting the specific individual, based on asophisticated understanding of hierarchies, networks, controls, borders, and learned value systems. \nIsabela Basombrio
