\nPREFATORY NOTE. \nAT the request of The Fine Art Society I have furnishedthem with some commentaries on the sketches to ex-plain my method of painting;and I did so on the strictcondition that the paper should be published exactly asit left my hands;so that the Society are not in anydegree answerable for the opinions expressed in it. \nJOHN BRETT. \n38,HARLⅡY STR宜ET,November I4th,1886. \nNOTE BY THE DIRECTOR. \nThe sketches and pictures are for sale at the prices charged by the artist athis own studio,a list of which can be seen by applying to the attendant. \nAs regards the seven sketches marked with a star in the catalogue,Mr.Brett reserves the right to paint pictures from them during the winter, andspecial arrangements will be made as to the time of their delivery to theirowners. \nThe sketches are not signed,Mr.Brett having always maintained the rulethat signature should be reserved for finished pictures only;but in all casesthey bear the date and name of the place in his handwriting. \nTHE COMMENTARIES. \nTHE object of this little exhibition as far as I am con-cerned is to place before the public an average summer'swork of a landscape-painter out of doors, with the viewof correcting some prevalent misapprehensions as tothe practice of this branch of the art.It consists offorty six sketches and three small pictures, paintedbetween June and September,1886.Many days wereof course unfit for sketching in the open,by reason ofthe badness of the weather, and some of those days weredevoted to the production of the finished pictures marked \nA,B,and C. \nA similar collection is produced every summer, chieflyfor the purpose of extending my own acquaintance withthe visible world, but hitherto they have only beenshown tomy personal friends;and The Fine Art Societyare responsible for placing them before the public on \n4 \nthe present occasion.I merely lend them at theirrequest. \nAll painters labour under the disadvantage that thepublic and the critics when considering a contemporarypicture, have no access to the antecedent work leadingup to it. \nPictures having been once shown at an exhibition gomostly into private houses, and the studies for themremain in the seclusion of the studib. This isolation isunfavourable to the understanding of any considerableartistic effort. \nAs a rule, painters make no attempt to instruct thepublic, and are naturally reticent about their ownperformances. \nPress criticism too often falls to the lot of casualwriters, who have no technical education, and butlittle acquaintance with nature. The work is nearlyalways anonymous;the newspaper editors have nomeans of judging of its correctness, and the pay is soslender that they can hardly be very exacting;almostanything seems to answer the purpose if fluently ex-pressed;and it is a well-established practice that ifyou cannot","cbCaicHOs3eBGgRG","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicHOs3eBGgRG","pdf",3519308,28,"English","# Three
