\nESSAY AND GENERAL LITERATURE INDEX REPRINT SERIES \nForeword \nIN THE ARTS,as in Science,it remains for a compara-tively small group of pioneer experimenters to pave theway for new advances in new directions in the creativeprocess.Seldom has the significance of these pioneersbeen recognized during their period of maximum crea-tive activity.Once values(commercial as well as aes-thetic)have been established and accepted, the learnedvie with each other for the credit of discovering and ofjustifying and rationalizing their new enthusiasms.Thecreative act in criticism and in collecting, however, isthe discovery of those hidden aesthetic values which,in escaping the limitations of contemporary taste,es-tablish a different pattern for the future. We shouldhonor more than we do those collectors and critics whohave detected the importance of the pioneer artists andhave paved the way for their wider acceptance andunderstanding in our own time. \nThe modern movement, which had its roots in thelate nineteenth and early twentieth century, has nowattained the respectability that comes with advancedage and has attracted to its interpretation and defense.an impressive army of Boswells. Its bibliography is nowas weighty as it is still in many instances obscure.Isn'tit time to pay tribute to that small group of pioneerartists—collectors—critics who saw the great potentiali-ties of nonrepresentational art before this welter ofwords arose to becloud its purpose on the one handand to justify verbally its existence on the other?Thefarsightedness of these pioneers,as seen in the pictures \n# THREE LECTURES ON MODERN ART\n\nthey created and collected,is of primary importanceto us today for it is on the visual evidence rather thanon verbal rationalization that the ultimate survival val-ue of these art forms will be judged. \nYale University is indebted to the Société Anonymeand to its founders Katherine S.Dreier and MarcelDuchamp for the privilege of acquiring and preservingone of the first important collections of nonrepresenta-tional art to be assembled in this country. We paytribute to them and to the artists with whom they wereassociated for courage and a sense of adventure duringa period when these qualities were less acceptable inthe world of art than they are today.Without thepioneer exhibitions and other activities which MissDreier and her associates sponsored in the 1920's,thefavorable response to the extraordinary activity of theMuseum of Modern Art a decade later would scarcelyhave been possible.Without the nucleus of the collec-tions which Miss Dreier acquired and assembled, thegrowth of modern collections in America would havebeen much slower and public acceptance and responseconsequently retarded. In the light of continued pub-lic hostility to forms of art which many still find in-comprehensible,it is easy to forget how greatly thenumber of its defenders and supporters has grown dur-ing the past twenty-five years. \nCHARLES H.SAWYERDean:School of Fine ArtsandDirector:Division of the Arts \nvi","cbCaivuJh3Gu4hLF","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivuJh3Gu4hLF","pdf",3797174,112,"English","#
