in Tunis. This uncle wasnot kind.He made the boy work all day inthe pottery workshop and beat himwhenever he made a mistake. \nTheo had to clean tools, clear ashes fromthe oven fires, chop wood, carry heavy bagsof clay.He hated it.Then one day he was sotired that he dropped a tray full of pots. \nThey all broke. His uncle came out with astick and beat him again. That night Theodecided to run away. \nWhen the house was quiet,Theo got upfrom his straw mattress. He picked up a bagfrom the workshop and filled it with datesand figs and bread. He ran out of the houseand down to the docks.Ships were tied upagainst the sea-wall.One of them had a redsail, hanging ready to be put up.The deckwas piled high with large straw baskets. \nTheo crawled on to the deck, opened thetop of the first basket and slid inside. It washalf-full of oranges and they made acomfortable bed.He pulled down the lidand slept. \nNext morning he woke. The ship was movingand men were working on deck.Theo atesome dates and stayed in the basket.Assoon as it was dark he crept out.The redsail was fully spread.A strong South wind \nwas filling it.The ship was moving fast.Theowent back to his basket. \nThe next day passed slowly. All the timeTheo was afraid that he would be found andtaken back to Tunis. He did not care wherethey were going.Anywhere would do. \nNight came again and went.Still no land. And then early the next morning there wereshouts and a lot of noise. He heard a mansay,'We'l shift the baskets first.' \n'Yes,master,'said another man.'As soon aswe have tied up.' \nTheo had to move.Carefully he raised thebasket lid, slid out and dropped into the sea.A wave picked him up and carried him awayfrom the ship. Not far off he saw the town. There was a large hill.It had a stone buildingon the top of it.A temple.Theo knew wherehe was.He was back home in Athens. \nIt was not far to swim and soon Theo wasclimbing up a stone wall on to the dock. \nThen something really bad happened.Out ofthe shadows a man ran up and grabbed hisarm.'I need a boy like you,'he said.'Thisway, little water rat.' \nTheo tried to pull away, but the man heldhim firmly. After a short walk they came toa tall ship.It had two rows of holes in thesides for oars.Painted on the prow was ahuge picture of an evil eye.","cbCaincaIEyB5Lmp","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaincaIEyB5Lmp","pdf",2576386,52,"English","# Three Jobs for
