year 18g2 I had the pleasureof showing to the Marquess of Bute,at the British Muscm,a bilingual Coptic and Arabic manuscript containing three11published Encomiums upon Saint Michael the Archangelby Abba Theodosius,Archbishop of Alexandria,Severusof Antioch, and Eustathius,Bishop of Trake, respectively;this manuscript is the property of Lord Zouche, who wasso kind as to allow me to takc a complete copy of itso far back as I885.Lord Bute enquired concerningthe contents of the Encomiums, and regretted that theseinteresting documents were not accessible to the studentsof the early history and literature of Egyptian Christianity, and subsequently he undertook to defray the expensesconnected with the printing of the same. \nTo Lord Bute we already owe a work on the CopticLiturgy,*and it is to his help that those who occupythemselves with the Christian literature of Egypt owethe appearance of this contribution to printed Coptictexts. \nThere is no reason for doubting that the thrceEncomims were written about the beginning of the \nVITth centuury of our era,and in them we sec some ofthe earliest specimens of this class of Coptic literature inexistence. The most ardent lover of Coptic literaturemust confess that the lives of Coptic saints and theEncomums upon them are generally too full of miraclesand somewhat monotonous exhortations to the listenerand reader, but thc Encomiums 1now published for thefirst time are interesting exceptions to the rule, for theycontain narratives which are full of importance, not onlyfor the plhilologist and antiquary, but also for tlhe studentof comparative folk-lore and demonology. To the Coptictexts are appended thc complete narrative portions ofthe Arabic translation of the Encomiuns, and the Ethiopicversion of the Encomiun upon Saint Michael by Severusof Antioch, edited from a venerable manuscript of theXVth century in the British Museum. \nThe Encomiu by Eustathius,Bishop of Trake,is ofspecial interest, for it supplies details concerning themaking of an eikv of Saint Michael, and containsan extract fron the Coptic version of Physiologus, wlhichwe now know existecd. To my friend Prof.1.Guidi ofRome I am indebted for valuable assistance in readingthe proof sheets of the Arabic portion of the work. \nMay 15.1894. \nE.A.WALLIS
