professionalnursing in the United States. At ANA'sConvention,June 14-19,1996 in Wash-ington,D.C.,celebrating ANA's 100thbirthday,it was clear that the public, thepress and those in political office werelistening to nurses'voices through theAmerican Nurses Association. \nThat nursing's voice is being heard isperhaps most apparent by the willingnessofPresident Clinton to address the Ameri-can Nurses Association House ofDelegates and convention attendees. As amember of the Connecticut Nurses'Association, and therefore,ANA,you arebeing heard in the highest levels ofGovernment. It was exciting for those inattendance from Connecticut,to hearNursing both applauded and appreciatedas a major player in health care.ThatANA,and therefore, professiona!nursinghas a direct line to the major policymakers was indeed impressive. The op-portunity for professional nursing to be atthe table as the future in health care isshaped is now. \nThe issues facing health care consumers, providers, regulators and payers aresignificant. For example, what are thelicensure issues as practice moves acrossstate lines via telehealth and telemedicine? How are standards monitored
