\nPreface \nSome years ago, while conducting research for a monographon the epic aspects of Thomas Hardy's The Dynasts,I becameaware of a special problem:the wide scattering of the shorternonfictional writings of the Wessex poet and novelist. Most ofthem have not been reprinted. They are occasional pieces ofvarying length, and the obscure publications in which many ofthem appeared are no longer current. \nThe most fascinating thing about all of them may be the factthat Hardy prepared them for the press, and carefully wrotethem so that they would appear in type exactly as he wished. They constitute a record of Hardy's opinions, extending over a fullhalf-century,that will surely interest his large public throughoutthe world. \nDetails about the histories of the various texts reprinted hereinare given in Richard Little Purdy's bibliographical study,ThomasHardy(London,1954).In the years since its appearance thatexcellent work,a model of textual investigation and annotation, has become the foundation of much Hardy scholarship, includingthis collection. \nI have not included any of the uncollected fiction or poetrythat Hardy published during his lifetime(with one exception:the charming \"How I Built Myself a House\"),and I have nottried to reproduce the many brief, unimportant items listed inPart III of Professor Purdy's volume,\"Uncollected Contributionsto Books,Periodicals, and Newspapers.\"Some of these consistof a few sentences or even a quotation selected for a special occa-sion;their interest is limited. They are summarized in the Ap-pendix,however,on pp.241-256. \nEnough remains to make a substantial volume for all rcaderswho want to know more about Hardy—more than twice as muchmaterial as Ernest Brennecke collected for his comparable book,Life and Art(New York,1925),a work long out of print.Theliterary prefaces which Hardy wrote or revised for the definitive \nWessex Edition of his own writings,as well as the literary prefaceswhich he contributed to the works of his friends, are gatheredhere for the first time, providing a fuller understanding of hisconcept of the creative artist, and of his views of the relationshipbetween art and life. \nThe interview in which Hardy made clear his wishes for thepreservation of Stonehenge as a national monument was shapedand edited by Hardy, and should be considered his work. \nIn everything Hardy wrote for publication,he was a profes-sional.His dedication to the craft of
