Oliver’s lecture reconstructs Thomas Condon’s life and calling, tracing his family’s migration from Cork County, Ireland to the United States and his formation through education and early work. The narrative follows Condon’s seminary training, marriage, and arrival in Oregon in 1853, then frames his mission within the American Home Missionary Society’s plan for church building and moral influence in the expanding West. Mission \nThe John Condon family of Cork County,Ireland, decided to casttheir lot in the United States. The family, owing to lack of resources, split up;the father and two elder sons first took ship to New York;and,as money was available, the mother and three younger children, including Thomas, came later,in 1833.The father was a stone cutterin Ireland and New York. The young Thomas may have becomeinterested in stone quarries through this work his father —and alsohis brother—was doing. \nHowever,as Thomas reached adulthood his father died, and hebegan planning his life in central New york state. The family recordsays that the mother,Mary Roch Condon, was a devout Catholic,\"but the father was not.\"Does this mean that he was not devout, notCatholic,or neither? \nThomas went to Camillus Academy a year, taught school at leastparts of three years, part of the time to penitentiary inmates,gradu-ated from Auburn seminary, applied to the American Home Mis-sionary society for an assignment, and was sent to Oregon. He mar-ried Cornelia Hult on October 31,1852 and took ship for Oregon onthe Trade Winds on November 13. \nThe Trade Winds, under Captain Webber, carried eight mission-aries of the American Home Missionary Society and their wives, sixof the couples for California, two—Cornelia and Thomas Condonand Charlotte and Obed Dickinson—for Oregon. They arrivedsafely and speedily(four weeks before they were expected)in Port-land on the evening of March 3,1853—on Condon's thirtiethbirthday. \nWhat was the function, purpose, and program of the AmericanHome Missionary Society? The revivalist spirit and the westwardmovement of population brought about the Plan of Union in whichsome Presbyterians and Congregationalists united in sponsoringnew churches in the west—meaning New York state and into theOhio valley. This Plan of Union started in Connecticut in 1801 and, enlarging to include other groups and areas, organized formally asthe American Home Missionary Society in 1826.By 1832,it was adeveloped national organization,an arm of the two denominations. \nFor the year 1850-51,the Society had 1,065 missionaries in thefield.New York had 170;Maine,91;Vermont and Massachusettseach 61;Illinois,119;Ohio,98;the entire Southern section of theU.S.,15,mostly in Virginia.Minnesota was just opening up andhad 4 missionaries, the same number as California.Oregon had 2 \nA.H.M.S.missionaries. \nOregon received about 10,000 immigrants in 1851,new recruitscrossing the plains
