\nA Trustee of the General Assembly -1936-1954 \nA Director of the Presbyterian Historical Society \n2524 \nThe word Protestant is not just a negative word;it is a vigorous positive word.It comes from two Latinwords-“pro,”meaning before, for,in favor of,and\"testari,\"to be a witness.A Protestant therefore is awitness for the true Gospel, for the primitive Christianfaith. \nThis is Protestant Christianity \nby WM.THOMSON HANZSCHE \nESUS was not interested in organization. He formed nocult or priesthood;he wrote no books;he gave no ex-plicit directions about a church. His greatest criticismswere against the Pharisees, the believers in ritual, formand ceremony. In the Gospel narratives Jesus seldommentions the church;but he talks about the Kingdomof God in over 106 passages. There were two great templesamong the Jews in Palestine, the temple in Samaria and thetemple in Jerusalem.Jesus said:“The hour cometh when neitherin Samaria nor in Jerusalem shall men worship;...true wor-shippers shall worship Him in spirit and in truth for Godis a spirit and those who worship him must worship him in spiritand in truth.”(John 4:21-24.)Jesus established no ritual, noset form of worship,no form of church government. He broughta message and he lived a life;the message and the life were priorto the Church, they came before the Church was formed;andthe message and the life were to Him supreme. It was the mes-sage,the Gospel, which he commanded to be carried to the na-tions of the earth. \nThe Christians were left in a world of variety and confusionand perplexity with no set form or blue print for organization. In the beginning,Christianity was a fellowship,so complete andvital that for a while Christians had all things in common.ThatChristianity should be a fellowship is central to the Gospel.Theepistles were written much earlier than the Gospels, and theepistles speak often of the church, the Christian fellowship.Theapostle Paul uses a unique expression about the church.Hecalls it \"the body of Christ,\"the organism whereby Christ makeshimself known in the world after he physically left it.Adds Paul,“we are members one of another”as the different parts of thebody are mernbers of the body.Apparently nobody in the worldever thought of being a mernber of anything until the Christianchurch began! The Christian church was the original member \nfellowship-it is the People of God,which had its roots and be-ginnings in the Old Testament and goes back to the purpose ofGod before the world began. The church is not man made,con-stituted by man;it was originated by God.The word for Churchin the Greek New Testament is \"ekklesia,\"\"the chosen band,\"\"the called.\" \nJesus was not a priest;there was no priest among all his dis-ciples.They were all business men, ordinary fishermen,peas-ants,called aside and trained by Him.Jesus, when he preachedindoors, preached in the synagogue;he never had an official partin the worship_of the Temple, where priests were;synagogueshad no priests. The people controlled the synagogues, and electedelders from their number to rule them. One of their numberwas chosen as a teacher. And the Christian church came out of thesynagogue. \nThe prophets of the Old Testament spoke and preached theWord of God in the midst of the workaday world wherever theywere, and had no connection with any formal ritual;Jesus wasof the line of the prophets, not of the priests. The Christianchurch is of the line of the prophets, not of the priests.Paul saidto the philosophers at Athens:\"God dwelleth not in temples madewith hands...he is not far from each one of us,for in Him we liveand move and have our being”(Acts 17:25). \nFor the f","cbCaie1QlYIDYR8e","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaie1QlYIDYR8e","pdf",2554052,"English","# THIS IS
