FOREWORD\n\nThe 2016-2017 academic year brought significant changes toMontana State University Billings.A long-time College of Arts andSciences dean,Dr.Tasneem Khaleel, who had returned full-time to theclassroom a year or two before, retired,as did two Department ofEnglish,Philosophy, and Modern Languages professors,Dr.St.JohnRobinson in Spanish and Dr.William Kamowski in English (see \ndedication).The Rook, too, absorbed a major change when Editor JaredNielsen stepped down to pursue an important internship opportunity.Fortunately,Alice Wilcox took over, and the final issue you are holdingowes its existence to her,to Jared, and to the student editorial staffwho,as always, selected the poems, stories, and artwork reproducedhere. And,of course,to the student writers and artists of MSUB,whosework is the content of and reason for The Rook. \nCongratulations are due to the winner of the annual Sigma TauDelta poetry contest and to the 15 MSUB students whose work wasaccepted for publication, and to others who, though their work doesnot appear here, are on the road to future meaningful and evocativeartistic expression. It is our hope that you will continue to produceliterary writing and art and that your names may soon appear, eitheragain or for the first time,in a future edition of The Rook. \nBernard QuetchenbachProfessor of EnglishFaculty Adviser \nDEDICATION \nDr.William KamowskiDr.St.John Robinson \nDr.St.John Robinson \nAt first, his intensity and put-you-on-the -spot teaching stylecould be unsettling, but Spanish students grew to respect and love Dr.St.John Robinson for guiding them through a language and culture withenthusiasm and passion. One student remarked,\"His anecdotes abouthis life and events when he lived in Spain were always delightful.Hisability to produce from his memory and experience a Spanishvocabulary word, regardless of its obscurity, was impressive.\" \nWhen asked about his colleague,Dr.Thomas Regele \ncommented,\"It has been wonderful to work with such a completeprofessional.I have never worked with someone more dedicated to theprofession, nor have l ever worked with someone with whom it is soeasy to get things done.I suspect that the latter is due,in great part, tothe former. In any case,it has been a great pleasure and an honor towork with St.John Robinson.I have always been, and continue to be,impressed by his commitment to our students, our program, ouruniversity, and our community. \nDr.Robinson's commitment to the Spanish program at MSUBhas helped shape a bright future for many students who have carriedthat dedication into their lives and community. As Dr.Regele pointsout,\"One of his former students, who is now a successful professionalin the community, recently remarked that St.John is an amazingprofessor who really cares about his students. He has been this \nstudent's teacher, mentor, and boss, and he will always be her friend.Icould not agree more.\" \nThe Rook Staff would like to thank Dr.St.John Robinson for his35 years of service at MSUB,and we wish him the best in hisretirement.
