YORK,WINTER,1948.NUMBER 1. \nEditorial \nTHERE aren't very many lively and interesting religious arguments in this country these days.Thebooks that have done best in recentseasons, expounding for the Americanpublic the Catholic Faith--books,for in-stance,like Frank Sheed's Theology andSanity and John Brunini's Whereon toStand—are not polemical. They are main-ly descriptive and expository, almost de-scribing the Faith as something unknown. They do not argue for one religious posi-tion against another. How often domembers of this Saint Paul Guild have todefend the doctrines of their Churchagainst convinced attacks by members ofa Protestant Church? How often doothers challenge us with a burning alter-native religious belief to the Catholic be-lief which we hold?Almost never.Rudepeople sometimes talk aboutschoolbuses. \nNo,the spiritual pattern of the land isnot of blacks and reds and whites or anyvivid colors that spiritual strife and reli-gious energy paint across a countrywhere strong and earnest believers differin their faiths and fight for the triumphof the one they know is true.Gray is \n our favored color. We are free indeed of tthe terrible passions and perversions andcruelties with which wrong religious be-liefs and wrong and inadequate religiousmorals in various times and places haveflayed the world. Now,among us inAmerica, the central problem of theChurch is not to apostolize and convertstubborn and active separated Christiansand non-Christians,nor to protect her-self from the claims and convictions andattacks of other churches,Christian ornon-Christian,enemy of the Catholic. The enemy now is mainly--nothing:anothing,a yawning negativeness which isa contestant terrible as any Moloch orTurk or Tartar. \nThe tragedy of this nothingness ap-pears to be the heavy burden of the mes-sage given by the bishops of the NationalCatholic Welfare Conference at the endof their meeting this fall: \n“...There are many men—-and theirnumber is daily increasing—who inpractice live their lives without recog-nizing that this is God's world.Forthe most part they do not deny God.On formal occasions they may even \nmention His name. Not all of themwould subscribe to the statement thatall moral values derive from merelyhuman conventions. But they fail tobring an awareness of their responsibil-ity to God into their thought and ac-tion as individuals and members of so-ciety.This,in essence,is what wemean by secularism....Secularism,or the practical exclusion of God fromhuman thinking and living,is at theroot of the world's travail today.... \n\"Secularism does away with account-ability to God as a practical considera-tion in the life of man and thus takesfrom him the sense of personal guilt ofsin before God.It takes account ofno law above man-made law.Expe-diency,","cbCaip0I5nOHh2Yf","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaip0I5nOHh2Yf","pdf",1938168,44,"English","# TABLE OF CONTENTS\n## Editorial\n## A Racial Barrier to Church Unity\n## How the Study of
