\naybe this is “goodnews\"for the premier.Perhaps he should comeinto the classroom andsee for himself. We,asteachers, are no longertreated as professionals, but as statistics based onmoney. \n# restructuring and\n\nreduction have reducedwaste,it is a positivething, therefore,“a goodnews story.\"If largerclasses, less preparationtime and less money forspecial needs are theresult,I would say Mr.Klein is incorrect. \nfind it objectionablethat Premier Kleinshould reduce somethingas important aseducation to a politicalfootball.Education inAlberta is certainly goodnews, because it hasalways been of highquality.Teachers are notopposed to change, justto change for the sake ofchange, and influencedby narrow businessinterests. \na principal,my contact time withstaff and students hasdiminished drastically—Iam“swarmed”bystudents and staff when Ihave a free moment. \nC \nincreased and fundinghas decreased.Accountability takestime away from teachersand administrators whocould be doing thingsrelated to teaching andkids. \nhis is the beginningof the demise of publiceducation.Soon we willhave pockets ofeducation andsegregation oflevels ofsociety. We arebecoming more like theUnited States. They arealready trying to turnback to public educationafter seeing the failure oftheir education system. \nquality of classroom \ninstruction cannot \nimprove with larger \nclasses containing more \nspecial needs students \ngetting less support. \nhis is a “good news \nstory”due to the \nperseverance and \ndedication of teachers. \nDespite increasing \npressure,decreasing \nresources and the high \nexpectations placed on \nstudents,the overall \nprofessional dedication \nof teachers has been the \nforce in the Alberta \neducation system that is \nstrong.Can this trend \ncontinue?I have serious \ndoubts and concerns. \neachers in Alberta are \nthe “good news.” \nThrough their efforts, \nthe negative impacts \nhave been minimized, \nunfortunately,in the \nprocess some teachers \nhave become stressed. \nwish it was.I am new \nto the field of education \nand am seriously \nconsidering changing \ncareers.I do not feel I \ncan do the high quality \njob I want to given our \npresent situation (and \nthe way the future \nlooks). \nIt \nis a“good newsstory\"in that it is lessexpensive, and criticismhas been deflected fromthe government to theschool boards and downto the schools. \nhe only majorconcern I have is thefuture.Charter schoolsand publicly fundedprivate schools may beterribly destructive forpublic education. It is anoutrage that publicmoney could be used topay for privateeducation. \nes,our school issuffering,of course. There are negatives tocutbacks, decreasedresources, and so on,butit has also forced us tolook at what isimportant to us. \nhave special needs \nstudents who require \nextra assistance with \nlearning.A special \neducation teacher is \nrequired for the school, \nIn \neven a teacher assistant \nAlberta 10 yearsago,we could sayeducation was a goodnews story.Today,it issad to say this is nottrue.Today we teach tothe test—marking—andthe pass.Good news? No,alarming news! \nwould be a help. These \nstudents need the extra \nhelp and deserve it. \nW \nalk aday in myshoes.I have never beenso busy. The only way Ican cope is to do less.","cbCaiodbe3MmwWwz","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiodbe3MmwWwz","pdf",3245058,"English","# THEATA NEWS\n## Premier Klein’s “good news story” claim\n## Reported impacts on classrooms and staff","[{\"question\":\"What claim did Premier Klein make about education in January 1996?\",\"answer\":\"Premier Klein described education as a “good news story” tied to his restructuring program, and teachers were asked to comment on that statement.\"},{\"question\":\"What classroom impacts do teachers mention in response to the restructuring?\",\"answer\":\"Teachers cite larger classes, less preparation time, and reduced support for at-risk and special needs students, with some saying instruction cannot improve under these conditions.\"},{\"question\":\"Why do some teachers express concern about future public education?\",\"answer\":\"Several comments argue that cutbacks and governance changes could lead to damaging outcomes for public education, including fragmentation or increased pressure toward charter or private alternatives.\"}]","THEATA NEWS - Teachers’ Comments on Premier Klein’s 1996 Education Restructuring | PDF"]
