Set against Colonial Williamsburg and Washington D.C., the narrative centers on family dynamics, travel mishaps, and memory’s limits—where events are recalled as remembered even when names and identifying details are changed. The story frames love, conflict, and closeness through the lens of four “bees.”","Virginia Evans \n[O](OceanofPDF. com)[ceanofPD](OceanofPDF. com)[F.](OceanofPDF. com)[ com](OceanofPDF. com) \nCopyright @ 2025 Virginia Evans \nAll rights reserved. As the book explains, memory is not always reality. \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nPrologue \nIT WAS RIGHT IN the middle of the Market Square, in Colonial Williamsburg, where East and West Gloucester Streets meet, surrounded by tourists admiring the freshly arranged Christmas decorations, when Bill called Peggy a bitch. Well, he actually yelled,“Ever since this trip started, my four sisters have been nothing but bitches to me!” Loudly, in front of a crowd, and of all people—Peggy! Peggy is the sweetest one of all of us. She had probably seldom ever heard the word and surely never said it. \n“Bill, I have been nothing but nice to you this entire trip,” was the only reply the offended Peggy could muster. \n“I said FOUR!” he responded as he stormed off. \nWe had been in the gift shop looking for a present to give my parents for their 50th wedding anniversary. Since they had been married in November, we had settled on a framed botanical print from the month of November. Peggy had gone outside to ask Bill if he wanted to contribute to the gift and have it be a present from all of us. I’m not sure what else was said, but I’ll always remember the day he said all of his sisters were bitches. \nIt was November of 1992. Instead of a huge golden wedding anniversary party with all their friends, my parents had decided that they wanted a family trip. I had never been on a vacation with my parents and all my siblings before. I had traveled a lot, but never with my whole family. My mother took us on ski trips to Colorado when Katherine was working there, and to Dallas and Ohio to visit Peggy and her family. And every summer, she drove me and sometimes others to summer camp in Virginia. We always took interesting little side trips to parks and shops all along the countryside. But the last actual family trip, one with both of my parents and all their children, was when they all went to Wyoming. Since I was only a fetus in \nmy mother ’s belly at the time, I don’t count that as a family trip for me. So, in November of 1992, at the age of 23, I went on my first family vacation. \nI’m not sure exactly why my parents chose Washington D.C. and Williamsburg, Virginia as the destination for their anniversary excursion. But they wanted it, and were mostly glad to have all their children and grandchildren together for a Thanksgiving vacation. \nBill had only been living in Virginia for a few months as he had just recently started teaching computer science at Virginia Commonwealth University. My parents had put him in charge of making the arrangements, despite Katherine having lived there for
