Unfortunately, many Catholics mistakenly believe this teaching refers to either Jesus’ conception in Mary’s womb, or to the virgin birth. \nThis is plainly wrong! \nMary, the Mother of Jesus, was given a very special gift by God. From the moment she was created, God made her free from sin. This is called the Immaculate Conception, and it’s one of the most beautiful teachings of the Catholic Church. \nThe Immaculate Conception means that Mary, from the very moment she was conceived in her mother’s womb, was free from what we call ‘original sin.’Original sin is the brokenness all people are born with because of the first sin of Adam and Eve. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they brought sin into the world, and ever since, every person ever born has inherited this broken nature. But God wanted Mary to be different because she was going to be the Mother of Jesus, God’s own Son. \nTo prepare her for this role, God kept Mary free from sin in a unique way before she was even born. This doesn’t mean Mary didn’t need Jesus to save her—she did! But unlike the rest of humanity, who will need to wait until their death \nfor Jesus to save them, Mary’s own Son, in avery special way, saved her at the very beginning of her life, before sin could ever touch her. This is why we say that Mary was conceived“immaculately,” which means “without stain.” \nGod gave Mary the gift of the Immaculate Conception because it was fitting for her to be pure and holy as the Mother of Jesus. Think about it: if you were going to build a beautiful house for someone you loved, you’d want it to be perfect, right? In the same way, God created Mary as the perfect dwelling place for our Lord Jesus. \nThe Immaculate Conception celebrates Mary’s unique role in God’s plan of salvation as the pure and perfect vessel chosen to bring Jesus into the world. In her purity, Mary became the living tabernacle of divine love, a vessel prepared to bear the Saviour of the world. \nMary’s Immaculate Conception reminds us that a life of purity and holiness is attainable for all those who cooperate with God’s grace and surrender to His Will. \nJust as Jesus came to us through Mary, so we too come to Jesus through our same Mother. Through her Immaculate Heart we come to know and love the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. She is the perfect and most pure vessel for us to come and know our Saviour and Lord. \nA little Help from the Franciscans! \nThroughout history, Christians had long believed that Mary was “full of grace” (Luke 1:28), and saw her as the “new Eve,”whom, together with her Son was seen as the holiest of all people. \nDespite the acceptance of Mary’s holiness, it was nevertheless debated whether or not she had been freed from sin her whole life. This caused much tension among the early Church theologians such as St. Irenaeus and St. Bernard of Clairvaux who suggested that if Mary was indeed \"full of grace\", how could she share in the fallen state of humanity? Could such belief in Mary’s Immaculate nature contradict the very Catholic teaching of Jesus as Saviour of all. How could Jesus be the saviour of all, if Mary was not in need of saving? It didn’t make sense. \nTo this extent, one of the greatest all-time theologians, St Thomas Aquinas, in fact totally denied the concept of the Immaculate Conception when he said, “the Blessed Virgin did indeed contract original sin.” \nAround this same time lived some of the great Franciscan theologians, such as St Bonaventure, and Bl. John Duns Scotus. It was precisely the Franciscans who became a leading voice in developing Marian doctrine in view of St \nFrancis’ own devotion to Mary as the “Virgin made Church”. \nSt. Bonaventure, while he didn’t fully explain the Immaculate Conception the way we understand it now, argued that Mary was made holy by God from the very start.
