Using portraits, anecdotes, and Thurber’s firsthand recollections, the text explains Ross’s difficult temperament, his demand for perfection, and his unusual preferences for distinctive information and unconventional creative methods. It also highlights the magazine’s distinctive sophistication and its roster of major writers and artists, including Thurber’s drawings and their by Jean Pillement(1728-1808),courtesy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art \n# The Years with Ross\n\nBY JAMES THURBER \nHE was homely. He was awkward inmanner and in speech. He was imper-fectly educated. He was often intellectuallyand aesthetically obtuse. He was seldomkempt and never couth.Yet he created amagazine which, for many thousands ofpeople, became the very epitome of so-phistication.The man was Harold Ross, and the magazine was The New Yorker. \nHAROLD WALLACE ROSS \nHe was a great editor.Few people knew him well. But even when you knewhim,it was very difficult to understand how that irritable, saturnine, provincialcharacter could have invented and maintained a periodical whose very nameimplied a brittle and urbane distinction, and whose mascot was a cool, elegantdandy scrutinizing a butterfly through a quizzing glass. \nSome editors are mild, companionable men who get on well with nearlyeverybody, who can smell a story almost anywhere and extract work from theirwriters by flattery and persuasion.Harold Ross worried all the time, hatedmeeting people, was dismally unbusinesslike (one of his secretaries robbed himof $70,000)and was usually angry with half his staff and suspicious of theother half.Yet he gathered round him a group of brilliantly original men andwomen who stimulated one another by contact and competition, and heirritated and bullied them into producing large quantities of excellent work. \nMany of them might have frittered away their talents,if it had not beenfor Ross's high standards and provocative manner. They would have talkedtheir ideas away over the lunch table, drowned their wits in martinis, orsmothered them in self-distrust and pessimism. Some would have become toodiffuse in their writing, haphazard and careless.Ross demanded the best fromthem all,and surprisingly often he got it.And what a staff he brought together!Alexander Woollcott,H.L.Mencken,Ogden Nash,S.J.Perelman,Robert \nBACHRACH Thurber—although Ross couldnot at first believe that Thurber was an artist at all, then printed his drawingsunder protest, and was long baffied both by their popularity(\"It's a fad of theEnglish,\"he
