YearofBlue Water should include“Literature needs lots of people,”asentence from Susan Sontag that perhaps speaks to the needfor readers, but in the context of these poems seems more tosuggest that community is in some way a requirement for themaking of literature—indeed,of any art.Pretty much fromthe start of this collection, and steadily throughout it,we en-counter two parallel communities, the speaker's living friends(Doreen,LiZhen,Michelle,Julie,Rebecca,to name a few),and a wide range of makers, living and dead,of art (includ-ing Agnes Martin,Frank O'Hara,Robin Coste Lewis,RobertHass). On one hand, these communities serve the usual pur-pose of providing companionship in aloneness. But anotherpurpose of community is to serve as testing ground againstwhich to pitch the self and within which to contextualize andbetter understand the self \nThis second purpose turns out to be the crucial one forthe speaker(whom I'll refer to as Yanyi, since he names him-self as the speaker). For one of the larger themes of The YearofBlue Wateris a sort of double crisis of self:an inability/un-willingness to know the self, coupled with an understandingof the self as something better off left invisible-in the eyes \nof the world generally, and so powerfully, that we begin to be-lieve what the world says about us.Understandably, the im-pulse is at best to hide: \nThe thing about hiding one thing about yourself for tenyears is that it warps your perception of the real you.Whatyou must protect against all odds becomes your defect, your truth, your failure, your success. It becomes the mostauthentic thing you have because you have no means ofgoing further,of wanting more. There were consequencesfor knowing myself.I didn't want to want more. \n—“For three years” \nAnd at worst, the impulse is toward suicide: \nWhen I am alone in the worst way,I am trapped withmyself.Something in me doesn't want me to live.No一something in me doesn't want me to continue. It must notbe life, what I've been doing. It can't be life,to not wantto live. \n—“Agnes Martin tells me” \nWhat exactly has made the self seem so unacceptable,so un-bearable?One of the most striking aspects of Yanyi's bookis how nonchalantly—in passing,as it were—we learn thatYanyi is trans.Six poems in,\"Before tarot\"opens with \nBefore tarot,I tell Diana that the worst thing about beingtrans isn't hating my body:it's not having many feelingsabout it at all.","cbCaitjYVIXK2ezj","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitjYVIXK2ezj","pdf",2224072,100,"English","# Foreword\n## Community as a requirement for making
