At this writing, a possible war could break out in the Middle East within hours. That has become a significant factor considering the original idea for this year ’s Wrestlemania appears to have been Hulk Hogan vs. Sgt. Slaughter on top. Originally, Hogan was going to visit the troops and Slaughter was going to go heavy into the Iraqi gimmick. None of this may change, or it may. The USO has denied the WWF’s request to send Hogan to Saudi Arabia, so that it out the window. The Iraqi Embassy is very hot at Vince McMahon because of his portrayal of Sgt. Slaughter and General Adnan. A lot of officials are worried that there may be legitimate fan violence should shooting actually break out in the Middle East because of the nature of the characters. The Embassy has also demanded McMahon quit using Saddam Hussein’s name in the hype for Slaughter, which may not be the worst of ideas given the current situation.  \nJAN 28  \nAt what point does the allowable bad taste that pro wrestling thrives upon cross the line? This question was debated heavily over the past week throughout pro wrestling, particularly within the offices of the World Wrestling Federation.  \nIt was no coincidence that Sgt. Slaughter ’s shot at the WWF title was to come just four days after the United Nations deadline for Saddam Hussein to withdraw from Kuwait.
